After watching the video that hectic so kindly linked too.

HERE

It got me thinking firstly of Mcmanaman then Owen who both had thier fair share of success with us but both left under a cloud, on the face of it to fill thier wallets, as opposed to say Gary Mac(only because he was mentioned today) who only played for us for two seasons yet is reveered(rightly so) wheras Mcmanaman and Owen are derided by certain sections but ultimately had more success and gave more to the club.

If Owen and Mcmanaman had left under different circumstances surely they would have been looked on in a better light in the history of the club(in the fans eyes anyway)

So is how a player leaves the benchmark for how he is looked at in the eyes of the fans??Or is it what he did for the team??

The examples are just that examples it is in no way a go at the players mentioned.

bit of both. At least with Owen we got a fee. McMoneyman said he was hopeful of signing a new contract right up until the day it was announced he was off.

As Owen would have if circumstances permitted, as most players would if circumstances permitted.

I know for full well its going over some heads.

Aye such subtle genius always will

McManaman's a c***,end of,and he wasn't as great as everybody made out either.

Good player,not great,and a moneygrabber to boot.

ahhh he was unstoppable for three years and we haven't replaced him half a decade later

Loved Macca but hated the way he left think he did do the dirty on us in the end but still loved the things he did for us. I thought owen was a great player for Liverpool but for me it was the all the farce over his transfer to Newcastle that I did not like with him I think that his England career was more important than Liverpool.

unstoppable apart from the fact he rarely scored & Sheff Weds worked out how to stop him. Once they did, everyone had him

That's daft, Macca.

He was great at pointing...

...and a worldbeater at stroking his hair.

Seriously he and Robbie carried that team for a good 3 years.

Did McMoneyman do more for us than Gary Mac though?

Gary Mac helped us win the treble.

Steve McManaman, helped us win the league cup.

Steve McManaman could have been great. He wasn't. He shone in a poor team with a poor manager that relied on him and Fowler heavily.

Gary Mac is a legend. We still sing his name. Steve McManaman is an ex-player soon to be forgotten about.

Carried them? To what exactly? We are really greatful for those 7th, 5th, 3rd, 4th places aren't we. It was lot easier league then with no CL places for 2nd, 3rd, 4th and therefore none of the investment that followed. There was only really Scum and laterly arsenal to compete with and we always finished below them.

Whatever McManaman was doing for the team on the pitch should be weighed against what he was doing off the pitch and in the dressing room.

A more erratic shot on such a "world class" attacking midfielder I have never seen. On his day,he was unstoppable, but so was Emile Heskey. He was not nearly consistent enough to warrant the hero-status some people gave him.

Oh,and he's a moneygrabbing c***. Did I mention that?

it's true. IN Dec (whatever year)at Anfield, they won 1-0 & manmarked him out of the game. That was that

I remember that game,it was embarrassing that it was Wednesday.

Once read an article on Macca & Owen, saying we brought it on ourselves with them leaving, as we created (?!) footballers too intelligent for their own good.

Weird.

Neither would be so disliked were the not local products of the youth system.

Shaggy suffered from being one of the first to do what suited himself while we still had crazy ideas that footballers actually cared about the club as much as we did.

I don't blame either one for wanting to leave, nor for the circumstances in which they did.

He was a staunch Blue, why would he give a toss about f***ing us over,

If I had my way he'd be banned from coming anywhere near Anfield ever again...

You'e the most cynical person I've ever (relatively, we are on an internet forum!) met, not saying it's not misplaced mind.

In any other walk of life, being offered an increase in pay + chance of accomplishing more would be seen as worthy. In football though, we expect loyalty from professionals. Would be fine seeing that way if not for the Carras of this world.

I don't think I'm cynical, I think I'm realistic.

It's been pointed out enough times in this thread along that Shaggy had won f*ck all at Liverpool. He had an opportunity to join a team that was playing in the Champions League and had a good shout at winning it. Can only speak for myself, but I'd have taken that offer for a paycut. If they wanted to hand me a salary increase and better weather to play alongside Zidane, Carlos and Ronaldo...well I think I'd be tempted.

He said he'd perhaps sign a new deal at Liverpool when maybe he didn't plan to. Boo-hoo...The club spun it out because it hoped an important player could be persuaded to stay. Strategic error on their part, but I think on balance we got good value from a player from him. Owen is the bigger miss as the lesson ought to have been learned and wasn't. I don't blame Owen either, but it's a bit much for me to hear about him coming 'home'. Home for Owen, and most players, is where the best deal lies. For all of them that's a balance of financial and personal demands, with more emphasis being place on either side depending on the individual.
