Where did you go on your honeymoon/romantic holiday?

I'm getting married in just over 3 months and we haven't booked a honeymoon yet. We had planned to go to Thailand or Africa but unfortunately the budget won't allow it now.

I would really like somewhere hot (going in May) but not too expensive. Lying beside the pool or on a beach is a must but I would also like to have the option to go on day trips to historical sites museums etc.

Some recommendations so far - Italy (Tuscany, Sorento, Lake Garda), Portugal (Praia de Luge), Turkey, Paris.

Amy ideas, comments on the above or recommendations of your own?

Cheers

Panic's kicking in!

Went to New York and it wasn't that expensive to be honest. If I were you and money is a consideration (as it is for the vast majority of us) just try and do something that allows you both to focus on each other and is new rather than doing something that you have done before.

Even an isolated cottage somewhere etc etc, go local but make cash available to go for a meal at somewhere really special

thing is the honeymoon aint that important yes you want it to be special but the wedding itself is the priority

Too true Swan Red, which is why we have left booking the honeymoon til everything else has been paid/budgeted for.

Turkey is being considered purely for the reason it was where we spent our first holiday together after we had been going out only 3 months.

Neither of us have been to Italy before though so that might be nice.

Cheers guys/gals - keep 'em coming.

I went to Lake Garda as well -stayed in Riva which is at the north end of the lake. That was nice -as Charlie Clown says the southern end is over-developed. Apart from the attractions of the place itself it's very handy for day-trips to Verona, Venice, the Dolomites etc. We tried to get to Venice while we were there but took a wrong rail connection and ended up in bloody Brescia!

We did Croatia for a week (heat, beach if you pick the right area) followed by Lake Bled in Slovenia for a week (romance, history). Wasn't that expensive, but this was 4 years ago, also in May, before Croatia became more popular, and probably therefore more expensive.

New York like SR said - or further south if you want a bit more heat - have a look at the Carolina's or Virginia - plenty of beaches and in striking distance of Washington - some fantastic places to see and eat at around there.

Or Mexico - take a look at that.

Have a look at Vacationstogo.com for deals everywhere plus Tripadvisor.com for reviews when you narrow it down and want to get specific information.

This links in with the ashes dates not falling right

Can I get away with delaying the honeymoon by a month?

:mischief:

Any of the following should help:

"but if we save up for an extra month, it'll be even better"

"The best hotel is booked up, but we wait a few weeks..."

"That t*** Kahnee made his wife wait 18 months. What's a few weeks for a great holiday down under?"

We did Sth Africa - dirt cheap once there but very pricey flights. If you want a hand arranging anything in SA, let me know, I have a mate who's a travel agent there

I was at Lake Como in August and got very wet and cold as it peed with rain. Depending on when you go, how about Grasse/Provence behind the Cote D'Azure. You could visit Nice/Monte Carlo just as easily as visit prehistoric caves and roman ruins. July/August suck cost wise, but in the mountains it's a touch cooler. Nice (or Toulouse) is also an easyjet destination so flights will be relatively cheap.

I flew my new bride all the way from California to Liverpool to see us lose a pre-season friendly at Anfield. Beat that.

I took my new wife to the Eternal City, Rome, in May 1984 where our fourth European Cup was won right in front of our very eyes.

Do I win £5?

Madeira in November

Excellent - quiet and peaceful which is what we both wanted...

Some excellent wine cellars were visited and Portugal at that time 1993 was extremely cheap...

On the negative side - probably the shortest runway I have landed on

How about Malta. Nice peaceful island with friendly people (most speak English). I would recommend Mellieha, which is North of the island. It has the only beach in Malta, and you can go on a 20 minute ferry trip to Gozo (sister island) where the 'Blue Grotto' is. Great for snorkelling/fishing. Check it out.
