Has anyone seen the world?

I've read things recently on here both from people who are itching to get away, and from others who are already in some far flung outpost. I know this is a learned and mature forum.

I'd like to know what the best ways of seeing the world are. I'd like to work my way around the thing, work as in work, spending a month each in a series of fantastic cities, mountains, coasts, lakes, dales, you know.

I'm inspired by my friend Sammy who cycled from his house in Northwich, to France, then Spain, then decided not to bother coming back and ended up going all the way to Nepal, Thailand and Aus.

There's also a filmmaker I follow on twitter, he's always posting from different footy tournaments around the world. That seems like a good way to do it.

I'd like to do something mad, maybe on a shoestring but maybe not. I'd also like to be learning things, in order to come back with a new perspective and ideas about what to do, businesses to start and all that. You get professors travelling to different universities don't you. That would suit. I'm not a prof though.

I'd like a next move in my head at least. I'm 33 in 2 weeks, it's crossroadsy.
