RHYS JONES’S killer has sensationally dropped his appeal against his 22-year prison sentence.

Croxteth gang member Sean Mercer, 18, was set to go to the Court of Appeal in London next week to challenge the tariff handed to him after a jury unanimously found him guilty of murdering 11-year-old Rhys.

But the ECHO understands he has now accepted that he will not see the outside world again until 2030 at the earliest.

Rhys’s parents, Melanie and Stephen, were set to travel to London for the appeal. Now they will not have to come face-to-face with their son’s killer again.

Sources close to Mercer say he still denies being the hooded gunman who killed Rhys.
