MP Graham Stringer claims labelling children as dyslexic should be consigned to history

Its an interesting claim.

My son struggled with reading until fairly recently. The school failed to notify us that there was a problem after their assessments, and i'd been to ask his teachers many times for help and advice because I knew he was struggling to read the words on the page. We were lucky enough to be told by a friend about a book called toe-by-toe and started him reading from that book. It takes 20 minutes a day, no more or less. He did it for about a year and went from the bottom of his class to somewhere in the upper half for reading skills. The confidence this gave him was enormous and we are delighted with the book.

So, i'm in 2 minds about what this MP is saying. I was able to help my son with a specific reading method and he doesn't struggle any more. I can't help thinking that if teaching methods like this were more widespread then literacy rates would shoot up. Maybe my son was lucky, maybe he would have gone on to be labelled dyslexic and struggled throughout his school career if we hadn't found this book.
