Just been watching Barcelona this morning and was impressed by the Unicef logo on their shirts. I find it impressive that one of the biggest teams on the planet can forego selling themselves to the highest bidder and instead promoting a charitable humanitarian organistion. It does them enormous credit. The same credit must also go to Aston Villa in this country.

As we can be considered to be on the same level as Barcelona on the international stage, I'd love to see us do something similar, though I doubt it will happen. I know the money argument is a persuasive one but how much more pride would we have in a team who instead of wearing a beer logo on its shirt, wore the name of an organisation seeking to make the world a better place?

I'd much rather us have the money from the sponsorship myself. We're not exactly flush at the moment and if having the Carlsberg on the shirts means we can afford that extra bit for a decent player then give me the logo on the shirt.

Without the sponsorship on the shirt, the cash has to come from somewhere. So is it ticket prices? Lack of money for transfers?

I'd like to see no sponsor on the shirts, (I don't have one on mine) I hate the advertising boards too. But it's income we need to compete I'm afraid.

I'd like us to find a 5m wide seam of platinum ore extending 8km beneath the Anfield Road end. We could end world poverty and buy a few Regi Blinkers.

Barcelona are only doing it so that they can get a paid sponsor in 5 years time. Just watch.

Now now, Mr. Cynical! Even if that was to be the case (which I doubt, they are Barcelona, one of the world's most famous teams after all), they will have given 6-7 years of publicity for Unicef which must count for a lot. It's very philanthropic and all credit to them. I only wish the club I support was as morally considerate.

Brondby have the Unicef logo on their shirts too, however, it is paid for by another sposnsor, Kasi Group. I don't belive Barca's deal is the same, but it may be, and it shows there's another way we could go. But it basically boils down to the sponsor rather than the club.

you've missed the point there. It's not that Barca couldn't attract a sponsor; its that their fans are used to them having no sponsor on the shirt - this could ease them in

I wasn't saying they couldn't attract a sponsor; my point was that they could attract virtually ANY sponsor. And again, that sounds very cynical. Even if that did turn out to be the case, it can only have done Unicef and their profile no end of good.

It's not though, it's piss. And if you love beer, you CAN'T love Carlsberg.

True. Carlsberg is piss.

We're already tens of millions behind our competitors in terms of income, throwing away another £10m a year isn't exacty going to help that is it?

That's the spirit, mate, pragmatism wins over philanthropy every time. ;) I did say in the original post that I knew the money argument was persuasive but how much more pride would you have in seeing your team do something to help make the world a better place?

I'd rather see my football club lifting a trophy to be honest. That's what it exists to do. Besides, LFC already does a lot for the local community. Also the club sacrificing all that money would end any hope of the new stadium ever being built which would have a hugely detrimental effect on the L4 area.

It's a nice idea, but it's pie in the sky.
