Never in my life would I have though a player that scored 2 goals to win a match against our bitterest of rivals, scored goals against Chelsea, Arsenal and Inter in the European Cup, gave a vital contribution in assists and workrate in a new formation and works his a*** off whilst playing out of position for Liverpool (without a word of complaint) all whilst going through the death of his father would become so ridiculed by our own and other clubs fans.

I hope he has a mamouth European Championship because he deserves it. He's a terrific player who is in a team that doesn't play to his strengths very often but he still manages to be a vital cog in the system.

A raise a class to you, for your effort, your courage and your vital goals.

Agreed. Nice to see someone giving him some credit.

I like him, despite his flaws, and think he's done extremely well in the circumstances. Good luck to him for the Euro's, he deserves it. No-one tries harder for the team (apart from possibly the monster).

He's a very good squad player, or should be.

I'm not sure a player that's capable of scoring 7 goals from 10 starts in Europe is best used as a squad player, to be honest.

He didn't do the best in the league with just 3 from 24 starts, but that'll go up next season, even if he's first choice or not.

I agree with the sentiment, just don't understand the timing.

Over the last week I've read on three other fans sites how it's a joke he's in the holland side for the european champs, then today people laughing at him saying that he's confident of making the cut and talking to big stuff about him a minute again - that's the timing thing really.

He really doesn't deserve to be a figure of ridicule that he is.

I think he and alonso have both been vital reasons why the 4-2-3-1 has worked so well. Not just them, but very big reasons. Both unappreciated by many.

I love his work ethic, but if he's our first choice right-sided attacker next season, we'll be playing for fourth again.

Limited footballer with a big heart.

I agree he's been better since the formation change but still not good enough.

I actually don't want him as our first choice right sided player, I think that's a waste out there, both for us and him - he's really stepped it up in that position though with some brilliant performances of late - in Europe especially.

But where do you want him?

Up top?

Not sure he's good enough up there either, mate.

As i've said, it hurts to say that cos he gives his all to the team

I don't ridicule him and have defended when people have criticised his poor performances because he's been asked to play out of position and be Rafa's Heskey.

That said, he isn't good enough to start upfront and he won't be consistent enoough over a season when played wide right. He'll have games where he gives an excellent performance but he's not good enough to sustain that form over a longer period which is needed to challenge for the title.

He's a decent player

If there's just one position up top, we all know who gets it. I'm sure we'll have games where there are two up top though.

Excellent post. We all know his limitations, but he plays through them bravely and honestly which is more than you can say for many players.

He scored 14 in his first season, being used as a striker.

In the new system, he wouldn't have to spend as much time as he did that year in midfield, and can concentrate his defensive efforts on harrowing the oppositions defenders and stopping them from starting attacks (almost like Sissoko used to).

I'd like to see him as a squad option - more than happy for him to start in games where we need to squeeze oppostions' flanks, and as a backup to Torres up front. People don't pay much attention to it, but he's a very intelligent footballer. His understanding with Torres and Gerrard is top notch.

As Big Stuff says, his great games are few and far between.

There's occasions were controlling the ball looks beyond him.

Not taking the piss, but he's not good enough to be a first starter in any attacking position.

I'd far rather him be a squad player than a waster like Voronin cos of his heart, but squad player is about his limit for us, IMO.

yes he works hard but three goals in the league all season is a woeful return.

But 7 in 10 starts in Europe is a bit great.

Kuyt should be an automatic starter in 'big games'.

I feel someone with a bit more guile/creativity would be ideal for some of the so-called 'smaller' games, where we struggle to break teams down.

But Kuyt should be one of the first names on the teamsheet in Europe and against other members of the big four.

I think some of the comments that have been directed at him this season have been utterly shameful as well.

The mystery is cleared up when you remember his tally of 3 league goals (2 pens and a deflection he knew little about).

Nobody can ever dislike the lad, but in terms of levels of quality required to be a serious challenger, he falls some way short.

He can be a useful squad player in a championship winning squad but if we want to challenge for the league and win it, we cant rely on Kuyt. He's done well the last few months though so fair play to him.

How the f*** does that clear anything up?

average player, at best he's 3/4 choice striker and occasional right sided attacker/midfielder. Can't fault his commitment or workrate, but he lacks real class.
