Jamie Carragher encapsulates honesty on the pitch, but we did not know he could be quite so disarmingly candid off it. When asked who he hoped would prevail in the Champions League final, such predictable platitudes as "may the best team win" were far from his lips. "I hope Chelsea win," he said. "I don't like Manchester United."

The animosity between Liverpool and United is complex and intense - so intense that several airlines yesterday would have breathed a sigh of relief yesterday that they did not have to ferry fans from the North-West to Moscow on unsegregated flights. But even for Carragher (right), who has spent his entire career at Liverpool and is Bootle born and bred, this admission said much for the depth of ill-feeling between the clubs.

Carragher's alliance with Chelsea will not make watching the final any easier. This indomitable centre-half always has Istanbul for comfort, but the record of reaching three Champions League semi-finals in four year is now no gloss upon the fact that Liverpool, despite record investment, are to end the season without a trophy.

While Carragher has avoided being as strident as captain Steven Gerrard in his comments on Liverpool's under-achievement, his reflections were touched by a sense of disappointment. "At Liverpool you're expected to challenge for trophies, we realise that," he said. "We haven't done as well in the domestic competitions as we would have liked and, in the Premier League, it looks as if we are going to finish 10-12 points behind the winners. Everybody - the manager, the players - knows we have to bridge the gap."

Conversely, Carragher, 30, highlighted that this season has been one of Liverpool's best in years in terms of league points, which could rise to 76 with two more victories. He was also defiant in defending the club's Champions League record, denying that losing to Chelsea in the semi-finals represented any gap in class.

"In the Champions League we're not behind Chelsea - we have been the most successful English team in it," he said. Indeed, reminded of the fine margins of this season's elimination, he was sure to reflect on John Arne Riise's injury-time own goal in the first leg. "You just need the little things to go for you, and a little bit of luck. But it was Chelsea's night."

Heard a funny story about Carra that may or may not be true.

He was away with England during the world cup. There was talk of him starting at right back if Neville wasn't fit (i think they went for Wes Brown in the end anyway) He text a mate back home saying 'have you heard anyhting baout Nevilles injury?'. His mate confused text back saying 'Why don't you just ask him?' to which Carra replied 'Do you think i am talking to that c*nt?'

The best thing about us losing to Chelsea is that if we're not going to win the European Cup, the thing I most want after that is for the Mancs to not win it.

I think Chelsea are probably the best equipped team in Europe to stop the Mancs in the final.

I think so too

...Considering they are the only team left apart from the Mancs.

Managers of the clubs were asked who they woud prefer to win the league between Chelsea and the Mancs .... Rafa's response seems to follow Carra's if you read between teh lines.. but Steve's Bruce's is revealing also shows he is not stupid as Curbishley mind you but the answers show what a club like Liverpool are up against to win the league while Ferguson is around.. all hail f***ing King Demento ... pathetic

Who do you want to win it?

"United would be worthy winners. They have played an attractive game as well going forward"

Alex McLeish Birmingham

Who will win the league?

"Manchester United will win it. I've always felt from the very beginning that they have more goalscorers in the team and, while Chelsea are finishing extremely strongly, that will be the difference"

Who do you want to win it?

"I have got ties with my old gaffer [sir Alex Ferguson], and it's nice to see him winning things, but I'm friends with a few of the boys at Chelsea, Frank Lampard for instance. It's great to see Frank doing what he did against Liverpool"

Mark Hughes Blackburn

Who will win the league?

"Reaching the Champions League final will give United a huge boost in confidence and I think they will get the job done now. If they hadn't got through it might have been different"

Who do you want to win it?

"I am an ex-Chelsea player, I was a Chelsea fan as a kid and I have fantastic feelings for United. It is fantastic for everybody involved in each club that they could both end up with both trophies or nothing"

Paul Jewell Derby

Who will win the league?

"I expect United, Chelsea and Arsenal to win their remaining games, I can't see any of them slipping up, which means United will win it as I can't see their goal difference being overtaken"

Who do you want to win it?

"Derby! But seriously, I don't care. Arsenal deserve to win something for the football they play but on their day Manchester United can also eat you alive if they're in the mood"

David Moyes Everton

Who will win the league?

"I've said all along Manchester United and I'm not going to change my opinion with two games to go. But I have to give Chelsea an awful lot of credit. They're doing really well but I tend to think United will just about pip it"

"I cannot see anyone else but Manchester United winning the title. I cannot see them slipping up in the last two games. You would not be surprised if Newcastle make it very difficult for Chelsea"

Who do you want to win it?

"I do not care either way. They are two fantastic teams who have played great football"

Steve Coppell Reading

Who will win the league?

"It is advantage Man United at the moment, but nothing is guaranteed. People have to perform under big pressure at the moment, with the intensity of big games coming up thick and fast. That could be a factor"

Who do you want to win it?

"I have a red bias, I'm afraid"

Steve Bruce Wigan

Who will win the league?

"That's a silly question. I can't say Chelsea can I but then I can't say

United because we play them next week. I can only back one team can't I?"

Who do you want to win it?

"That really is a daft one!"
