1) No chance of a quick break?

 

2) Having Torres/Babel/Pennant on the half way line will mean the opposition will leave 2 (or even 3)of their players back to mark him, increasing our domination of our own area.

 

3) We don't get in each others way when the ball comes in.

 

4) We can use some of the team to mark opposition players who are just outside our box waiting to pick up the ball

I take it this is a general point so I'll comment.

 

The oppo always leave two back. Convention is you have one more back than they have up, but never less than two

 

If you have the right men back in the right place, you actually position your flyers at the corner of your box and there is at least equal if not more chance of finding them with a shorter punch, throw, clearance or pass and a lot of space on the flanks as with a punch or clearance which may not make the half way line or a fifty fifty boot up pitch

 

You shouldn't be getting in each others way with zonal marking

 

The more you have back the better you should be able to pick up those on the edge of the box, how would a bloke on the halfway line mark someone edge of the box?

 

 

Far more likely to concede from a corner than score on the break from one.

We use a zonal marking system, so we don't get in each others way anyway. We are going through a blip. We've had the best set-piece defence in the country for the past 3 seasons.

Here's one for you. Was watching Reading Man U last weekend, Man U 11 back for every corner, the ball breaks edge of the box to Ronaldo who runs the length of the pitch unopposed and scores.

 

Reading v us, 11 back for a corner, ball breaks to feet, one or two passes, length of the pitch to score.

 

Gerrard penalty in the derby

 

10 back doesn't create more breakways or keep an extra oppo man back. 9 or less back is for desperation

 

you are more likely to concede than score from an oppo corner

 

 

 

arrange it well and you'll break better with 11 back. Shorter passes to unmarked men

How many goals are scored in the Premier League every season by teams from their opposition's corners? How many goals are scored by teams from their own attacking corners?

 

Over 20% of all goals in England are scored from set pieces. It's the one area of the game you can exert real control over from a defensive point of view, why not do it?
