Home support disappoints Ferguson

Ferguson has previously complained about the lack of crowd noise

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson compared the Old Trafford atmosphere with a "funeral" during his side's 1-0 win over Birmingham City.

Ferguson noticed the lack of voice from the 75,459 crowd after watching the match from the directors' box as part of a two-match touchline ban.

"That was the quietest I have heard the crowd, it was like a funeral," he said.

His comments come seven years after Roy Keane famously dubbed the Old Trafford crowd as the "prawn sandwich brigade".

Carlos Tevez's 25th-minute winner ensured the reigning Premier League champions began 2008 with a victory, but Ferguson was clearly unimpressed with the crowd's role in his team's performance.

"The players need the crowd sometimes but the atmosphere inside the ground wasn't good," said the Scot.

"There are some situations when we need them to get behind us and give us a lift."

Former Manchester United captain Keane made headlines in 2000 when he laid into sections of the Old Trafford crowd, claiming they couldn't "spell 'football', never mind understand it".

He later insisted that he was referring to the crowd in general, not just United's corporate fans.

And Ferguson has complained on previous occasions about the lack of atmosphere at Old Trafford.

"I think there have been days like this in the past," said the Scot. "It happened some years ago, when we were dominant.

"The crowd come to be entertained but sometimes we need them to help us get the right kind of performance."

They weren't playing us, so none of their songs were relevant or worth singing.

That's never stopped them before.

It's questionable whether they can actually be defined as 'Manchester United fans' as they actually sing about us more than their own team largely when they aren't even playing us.

It's pretty pathetic, particularly considering they have been the dominant force in our domestic game for so long now.

you hear the same as we do on the telly, how would you know any different ?

because when i hear the utd fans sing a song about you lot...which im no way denying that they do...i dont say that the 3 minutes they spent doing so is actually 90 minutes.

You don't go to Old Trafford. I'm not having a go but you don't, so how do you make this call?

because every live match ive watched in which you can hear one or two songs about scousers which at the very most lasts 5 minutes results in people on here saying the utd fans only sang about liverpool throughout the match...

thats including those numpties who think everytime the ronaldo song is sung its the two times one.

or do you think you can hear the songs being sung only if youre in the ground...which therefore leads to the question how the f*** do all these scousers hear all the songs about you when we arent playing you?

The microphone set up at a match gives a completely false impression over who's singing what and at what decibels. That said I'm sure United don't sing about Liverpool for 90 minutes but they DO sing about us at every match, how long the songs last and how frequently they're sung, I have no more idea than you do as neither of us go to Old Trafford.

Singing about Liverpool when you're playing Spurs or Villa is obsessive and pathetic,it makes us laugh and mock you, however as (according to Fergie) you lot spend most of the match in silence I suppose a few ditties about bonfires gives you something to hang your hat on.

I seem to recall JohnnyH telling us about some corporate invite he had to Old Trafford for a match not involving us, and I think he said they were singing anti-scouse songs quite extensively. I could be wrong though.

even using TV as a barometer OM, why do you think that you don't hear songs about man utd when liverpool play yet you do hear songs about liverpool when united play? i find it f***ing bizarre.

its just the notion that that is all that is sung or even for the majority of the match that Im arguing against.

mikes, decibels etc is all very well but you can hear whats being sung at matches most of the time murph....and the correlation between what is sung and what some of you lot think is being sung and for how long doesnt quite add up.

United fans have a lot of songs, in them they have a go at City, Leeds and the Scouse t***s. The die hards there hate the Scouse t***s and so sing a few extra about them. Its not as bad as you lot make out. Some of you c**** need to clean your ears out.

You say we are obsessed with you yet there are 3 of us on here ant 23 of you on our site.

Your lot phone up 606 and say we are obsessed with you yet you never hear a scouser on there who does not quote something United. ie how much we paid for blah blah or how we dropped points to blah blah or how long it took fergie to win blah blah or how many times he has won the CL. Funny that. This has been done to death, we are obsessed with each other and that will never change so feck you all.

Murph. 43 pts in the Xmas comp. :bleh:

Oh...Happy New year to you all.

Man U fans shouldn't be allowed to post on here.

Any Liverpool fans posting on a Man U site, WHAT THE F*CK ARE YOU DOING!!!!!!??????

Dont be so pathetic.

All the top teams forums have scousers, mancs, arsenal and chelsea fans posting on them. But you didnt know that because you dont go anywhere near them. That does not make you a real Liverpool fan. I bet you sing the Munich song?

This is the relevant part of the interview for us it seems to me:

"Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez suffered a much publicised bust-up with Anfield owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks, but Ferguson insists there is no such problem at Old Trafford. "At a number of clubs there have been problems with friction between managers and owners," said Ferguson. "But you can see how smoothly the United ship is running as far as that is concerned, despite early hostility over the Glazer family's ownership. "Those protests were unfair because they weren't given a chance but the Glazers kept their cool and our owners have been nothing but supportive. "Good teamwork starts at the top and I am happy to say, that is what we have at Old Trafford."

F*** me our new owners make the Glazers look desirable. Fergie can add Berbatov to his array of stars while we scour the continent for a cheap centre-half. Hope he's as good as Voronin.

If the atmosphere for the vast majority of League games is the same in the new ground as it is now, I can see similar accusations coming our way. I can't remember the last one I went to where the home fans were noticeably more vocal than the away lads.
