Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has branded Liverpool "unattractive" and "ugly".

The German, who took charge at the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer, believes the Reds are one of Real's main rivals for the Champions League this season, but is not a fan of Rafael Benitez's style of football.

He told Spanish daily AS: "Liverpool rely on an unattractive style of football. They are an ugly team to play.

"Look how they really gave Barcelona a going-over last season, when they knocked them out of the Champions League. That's what I mean.

"I would rate Liverpool, like AC Milan, as our major rivals for the Champions League this season.

"They never tire of winning big trophies."

YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Perhaps he did not see the game last Saturday.

And you dont need the Magic 8 ball to see that one.

Given the type of player we added during the summer and the additional dimension that has given us going forward that ugliness will still be there in that we will be very hard to score against, but we are also a lot more dangerous going forward. Its not just Real Madrid that should be afraid.

It is probably more likely that Schuster is worried that if things don't go well for him that RM will make another attempt to sign Rafa. Capello was fired because of the style of play, and Schuster probably sees this as being the best way for him to put Rafa down.

I agree with him and I dont see his comments as criticism at all.

He says we are a good effective team, but the football we play aint pretty, but its effective, how can anyone argue with that?

Laughable.

The snobbery of Real Madrid is preposterous.

You can dress it up as maverick football all you like, but the reality is they're have a s*** defense and no steal. They mask this obvious flaw but criticising a team who know how to defend. Nobody can see we play poor football.

Then again we'd all be bitter of we had a burnt schuster

Cos the football we play is attractive.

Easy really.

No its not very attractive, we dont commit enough players going forward and we dont create enough chances to label ourselvers as a team that play attractive football in the general meaning of the phrase.

Did you watch our most recent game? s*** opposition they may have been, but your claim that we don't create enough chances is nonsense.

we made enough chances last season FFS, but we just didn't convert enough.

I`m not talking about when we play cartoon opposition like we have done in our last two matches.

In general we sit back, dont commit enough players going forward, will usually only have 1 or maximum 2 players inside the box to be on the end of a cross etc.

Why fool ourselves, whats the point in that?

If I had this argument with a manc or something along those lines I would probably claim we played the best and most attractive football in the world, but when discussing with fellow fans I usually stick to the truth since there is no need to boast about anything.

I've never thought we played ugly football under Rafa.

Madrid hardly played great football last year and have only played a few games this year.

Madrid have been laughable in parts over the past few years.

We don't play ugly. It's a myth that has been put about by our detractors

Saying we play s*** football is not the same as "not boasting".

Who has said anything about s**** football?

Three things:

1. He is likely scared of us and really doesn't want to meet us

2. His comments have a bit of validity if applied to our recent past.

3. His comments are likely no longer valid. We have all seen the evidence of this so far this season with our own eyes. Rafa looks to be putting together both sides of the team. It's not just steely resistance anymore. It is silky and rapier-like ability going forward. When we grow in this aspect over the course of the season: watch out. It will be honed in the group stages, but if we draw Real Madrid in the knockout stages I'm afraid Sheister knows what will happen.

Pah, Torres is GOOOORGEOOOUUUSSSSSS!!!

Sing it brother.

most attractive football in the world

I'm attracted to watching remarkably effective defensive units. What constitutes attractive football is wholly subjective. Attacking football does not always equal attractive football.

I think he's paying us a compliment and the journo has twisted it

bang on. particularly given schuster wasn't renowned for his ethereal grace in his playing days. i'd say he'd be happy to be labelled an 'ugly' footballer himself.

the fact he rates us and milan as the teams to beat suggests teams can't flounce their way past us.

I'm sure you could have a go.
