Once a blue, always a blue - no class.

[u]The players were tugging each other’s shirts during a set-piece in the Italian penalty area when Zidane turned to Materazzi and said “If you really want my shirt, you can have it after the match.”

At this point Matrix admits he responded by saying: “I’d prefer your slut of a sister.”

Why didn't Zidane respond in the same way? Surely this is not the first time a player has said something personal to an opponent.

According to a lip reader at the time, Materazzi had said "I wish an ugly death upon you and your family."

I think Zidane had heard his mother had collapsed and been taken to hospital before the game, so it's understandable that he lost his temper. It's not like he was an angel his entire career, he headbutted some German bloke in the CL when he was at Juve.

Still the best player I've ever had the privelige to see play. Most of the best players are controversial anyway - Maradona, Cruyff etc.

What Materazzi said seems to differ from lip reader to lip reader.

And we only have to ask Steve Finnan how conclusive lip reading is.

This is true.

It was on the main BBC News though, so I'd like to think they'd be pretty sure before screening the segment.

If it was in some rag of a newspaper, I'd question it's authenticity a little bit more.

It makes sense then. Anything personal when you have a raw nerve will spark you into a more aggressive response than usual.

I hoep his mum was ok because she gave us a moment to treasure.

Are these the same lip readers who oversaw the Steve Finnan vs. Rio Ferdinand incident a season or so ago?

I am a huge fan of Zidane, in fact I tend to indulge mental geniuses ever more than run of the mill ones. And the fact that Zidane has a slightly crank aspect makes him even better.

I just love the fact that he scored that outrageous penalty and then got sent off in his last ever game in the world cup final, thats class!

My sentiments too... if only he knocked the world cup trophy off the stand when going off the pitch... that would've been the icing on the cake.

If as likely that is the correct quote, the reaction was heavily disproportionate. Why was Zidane so on edge? First the irrationally ambitious penalty, then one of the most brainless pieces of aggression seen in world football; I wouldn't be surprised if his mother really was that unwell.
