Are we becoming a team of leaders/captains?

I've noticed that we have a little trend occurring with the types of players we have signed and have got...

A fair few are leaders or captains in their own right, and I have to say I like the thought of that in our team.

Stevie has led England, and is Captain

Carra vice captain, but leads by example

Dirk Kuyt captained Feyenoord

Torres captained Atletico (at 22!!)

Yossi - Captain of Israel.

Hyypia - Captain of Finland (not sure on this one?)

Obviously not all your team can be leaders, but I like the thought that we have players available to step up in many positions.

actually this is something old ginsoak did back around 90 or 91 at the mancs - Basically signed about 5 or 6 club captains and had them all playing in the 1st 11.

The benefits of leadership and having players who wont hide is self evident. A player doesnt get to be captain unless he is one of the best players on the pitch - so the thinking was the more of such players the better.

Cant see too many issues about this being added to our starting/best 11. Reina is already a leader type in that he commands his area and his defence. So if we have a player of captain like material in goal (Reina), defence (Carra, poss. Sami), midfield (Gerrard, Masch shows signs of leadership too in his overall play) and forward (Torres) we have a leadership edge to the spine of the team.

The more captain types we have the better in my opinion!

too young to be captain at Sociedad is he?

i thought Karpin was captain at his time there.

Then again, Xabi's got that captain's aura about him. He'll captain Spain someday I reckon.

Aye - i remember looking enviously at United's midfield years ago - they had the Wales, Ireland, England and...er....Argentina captains at one point.

It's got to be a good sign, a team full of strength of character.

Don't forget Alonso. I still think he's Rafa's most trusted lieutenant out on the pitch.

it's the right word is lieutenant. we've got footsoldiers and carra's undoubtedly a sergeant but xabi's the eyes and ears.
