Love him or hate him, Gerard Houllier has to take a little credit for Rafa's success. Except for the goalkeeper, our defense is still Houllier's of the making and Rafa has in some instances been unsuccessful in trying to mould his own back 4.

Sure, Agger has replaced Hyypia and Riise is slowly being phased out as left full back..but Houllier should be given a little credit IMO.

I think he's had all the credit that he earned. He left three years ago, this team is Rafa's and nobody elses, playing Rafa's game. Souness was manager when Gerrard signed, but I won't be giving him any credit.

So, Rafa switched Carra to CB, making him and made him one of the best in the world, partnered him with the best young centerback in the league/europe and bought in Aurelio to replace Riise. So it's just Finnan then, who was s*** when Houllier was here.

Yeah, well in Ged.

I liked him and he pushed the club forward very much, but we are three years into Rafa's team. all credit goes to Rafa.

I think you will find that uncle Roy was manager when Gerard Houllier signed...

Rafa didn't switch Carra to CB and Riise has been our left back, not Aurelio.

No he shouldnt. He isnt the manager - Rafa is. Rafa gets the credit.

Erm, he quite clearly did. The only person to make him a permanent CB with any success.

On the few occasions he has been fit, aurelio was hte clear first choice.

That is all.

Ged switched Carra (back!) to CB at the end of his final season once he (finally...) realised that the Igor Experiment had failed

Gerard did switch carra to centreback towards the end of his final season.

At any rate, he could have gotten some credit for the first CL triumph. Three years down the line though, I think Rafa has to be the one taking the credit for this team. Evans didn't get much credit for Owen, Fowler, Carragher, Berger and murphy when we won the treble either. Nor should he.

beat me to it.

I think that coincided with an injury to Henchoz, who had been Ged's original choice to partner Hyypia once Project Biscan had been abandoned.

That's how I remember it.

Remembering Biscan at centre half just made me come out in a cold sweat.

Wasn't JC playing Cb for the latter part of GH's final season? After the failed Biscan experiment?

GH did a lot more for this club that a lot of hacks and fans want to admit. But the 'success' of this team is 100% down to Rafa.

Of course it was. He didn't switch him to anything. He was just being used in his utility "can play anywhere that we have an injury" position.

He has gone from utility to world class center back under Rafa. Houllier should take no credit for Jamie, just because he played a few games there - he had done before. If he stayed on he would have been shipped bough out to full back.

eh??

Carra played CB for the last two games of that season, uptil then Henchoz and Biscan were playing there

f***ing hell....i like Ged alot, but he cant claim credit for that

Last 2.5 games to be pedantic as he switched there at half time against Boro when Finnan came on for Henchoz

Rafa would have obviously seen the tapes of our games that season and decided that he saw Carra as a CB. If he had not played there at all that season, who know what would have happened

Think he'd have tried him there anyway as it was clear from the off he didn't rate Henchoz and there weren't a lot of other options knocking about the squad.

Ged had 6 years before he played him in his best position.

Seems odd to credit him with the 2.5 games at the end to say he made that master stroke.

he did start out using him as a centreback. He was righteously replaced by henchoz who was a superior defender at the time. Probably for most of the time ged was there, tbf.

I never claimed it was a master stroke - merely presenting the facts... and he of course had played him at CB earlier in his career
