Standing at the match.

A sensitive subject and rightly so.

You'll of all read Keith Wyness's comments today saying if we got our new ground, Kirkby (god no) or wherever then we as a club would be interested in having a section of the ground for standing.

Some of have come out and said it's a disgrace whilst others have said maybe we can look at it and see what could be done.

I was wondering what your views on here are for standing? I'll be honest, I'm in favour of sections of grounds being standing, lessons have most certainly be learned from that horrible day 18 years ago and I do think safe standing areas at football grounds are do-able.

Anyway, opinions? If any? Would you like a standing area at your new place?

I'm not a big fan of standing to be honest. Did it a couple of times at the old Goldstone Ground for Brighton and didn't enjoy it much. Plus large crowds make me feel a bit uncomfortable anyways.

I just see a cause and effect course where a return to standing would see a return of fencing and barriers.

Im split on the subject, but i'd have to say I'd be more in favour of standing areas. I believe we have learnt many lessons from whats happened in the past, I believe standing areas could be accommodated for in modern stadiums. The automatic entry system into Anfield now (with the swipe cards) checks how many people are entering the stadium. If the stading area had a similar system then we could monitor how many people are in there... avoiding overcrowding.

Some people have suggested removable seats (each person is designated a number, but there is no seat), which would work in a similar way.

Theres a gut feeling though which makes me feel if English clubs did adopt standing areas, it'd be a step backwards and would only open the door for future disasters.

the only people who advocate standing at grounds do so for profit . you can get more standing than seating. be weary of little clubs trying to bring it in to make money.

Not really, we're not saying go back to having a whole stand all standing, sections of stands being standing, if anything the standing sections would be at least half the price of a normal ticket, if cheaper and as someone has said, most clubs, including ourselves have systems where the amount of people are monitored. I don't think the standing issue is based on money, I think it's purely based on clubs starting to worry at the decline in athmostphere and culture at matches, money isn't the issue.

most away matches are standing all the way.

Thats different to whats being proposed I believe. At away games you're standing in front of a seat, with a set area which is yours. People behind can't force you further in front.

indeed but in seated areas and absolutely nothing like it used to be

Safe standing areas like they have in Germany where it's ticketed and everyone has their own space are a happy medium IMO.

It probably would, but I don't think we'll see anything like this at Liverpool for a good while

i will alway view standing with fences. there will be some fools who will make the police bring them in for "safety" as it goes i can take my 9 year son to the match in safety.

I stand perfectly safely on a terrace with around seven thousand people every couple of weeks at the rugby league. There is nothing inherently unsafe about standing. The German model shows that it can work but there are obvious reasons why many are reluctant to see it back. Personally I'd like to stand again. I stood for years on the Kop and on terraces all over the country and realise, and am glad, that we won't see standing like that back (as wonderful as the Kop could be - see the Youtube clip posted on the StEtienne thread - it could be f*cking scary, especially as a twelve year old), but I do think that well managed standing areas are viable. I don't think that we will get them any time soon though.

Exactly.

It can be organised properly and it can mean lower prices.

Nobody seems to mind the mosh-pits at gigs, so whats wrong with the same principle at footie matches?

If they`re all-ticketed; which means there`ll be an exact number allocated to standing areas, there shouldn`t be a problem.

One big difference now is that there are no cage fences at the front. It still makes me incredibly nervous.

how gigs have you been to with a pent up hatred by half the crowd to the other like i said earlier some fool will make the police bring back the fences for public safety

As many others have said, if it's done properly like it is in Germany, and proper precautions and safety measures taken i'm all for it.

You feel like a t*** singing whilst sitting down.. In my opinion its why the Kop is always better on Euro nights/big league and cup games, because everyone stands, and at aways. Everyone feels more inclined to "get involved" as it were.

My prefrence would always be to stand at the match but I think there are obvious reasons why Liverpool as a club will never have a standing area again.

I don't think that terraces are inherently unsafe, though the consequences of poor policing/'human error' are potentially much more serious than they are in a seated area. That said, I think any new terraces would be hugely different from what went before and safety-wise there would be very little difference between them and seated areas.

Do the HFSG or HJC have an 'official line' on this issue? I know that most of their comments haveb been very much against the idea and I do think that is something that we should respect, even if I don't necessairly agree with it.
