Dominus Maximus Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Everyone is raving about Torres and Villa. Stats for this year in Spain: Morientes 10 goalsPongolle 10 goals Villa 10 goalsTorres 8 goals Makes you think eh...
Dominus Maximus Posted March 4, 2007 Author Posted March 4, 2007 Hard to understand isn't it. Yeah, if anyone could explain they are welcome. I can't.
Clay Davis Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 ill try.... Morientes is a world class forward, when playing in Spain.Pongolle is a good striker that has been given a run of games in a team. Villa isn't doing as well as everyone thinks - although its evident that he's a class player.Torres is overrated.
Dominus Maximus Posted March 4, 2007 Author Posted March 4, 2007 (edited) Phew, saved us 40m there... I'm still tinkering with the idea of Trezeguet. He looks the part of a natural finisher and his aerial ability is above any other striker in the Prem. BTW Huelva are just 4 points away from CL qualification. Edited March 4, 2007 by Flamingo Crouch
Guest Kev Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Does/did Rafa want/wanted the players to be more involved in the play than what they are doing in Spain ?
Clay Davis Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Does/did Rafa want/wanted the players to be more involved in the play than what they are doing in Spain ?I think that could be a big factor in it too, for Valencia its Villa that drops deep and helps the play while Moro can do what he does best - score goals. And i think Pongolle is just being employed as an out and out striker that doesn't really do much else - much like Owen for us. Its obvious Rafa likes a different type of striker to most - which is probably why Morientes, Pongolle and Cisse weren't as big as a success as many would have predicted.
4411 Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Hard to understand isn't it. Not really, the amount of time he gets on the ball in spain doesn't compare to the prem. And he was turning 30 at the time so it wasn't likely he would ever adjust his game. 'tis also why I don't understand why some people are desperate for Klose, Iaquinta, or Luca Tony...its the same situation

So, is this Rafa's fault ? 1 - For using the right player but playing them wrong.2 - For using the wrong player in the first place.

Dominus Maximus Posted March 4, 2007 Author Posted March 4, 2007 In fairness Rafa's strikers did not lack clear cut scoring opportunities. So I wouldn't say. But his rotation princip could harm strikers more than other players. I guess it's the whole "in the zone" question with those strikers there...
Falconhoof Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 Pongolle has a hell of a lot about him. It would be a mistake not to give him a proper chance.
Dominus Maximus Posted March 4, 2007 Author Posted March 4, 2007 He can play the right wing if we needed one... Could be a bit kinky having him on the right, Bellamy left, and two striker up top.
Clay Davis Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 So, is this Rafa's fault ? 1 - For using the right player but playing them wrong.2 - For using the wrong player in the first place.i'm not sure fault is the right word. its obvious Rafa wants a particular style of play, and the striker's roles seem integral to that. In the case of Morientes - he could so easily have been the right player, it was a surprise to everyone that he failed to adapt to the Premiership - but these things happen i suppose. In the case of Pongolle, Rafa used him sparingly and obviously didn't feel he was ready and/or didn't fit the role of the type of striker he wants.
RafaShanks Posted March 4, 2007 Posted March 4, 2007 (edited) Yeah, if anyone could explain they are welcome. I can't. It's simple. As soon as any decent striker puts on a LFC shirt, they become s****!!! Pongolle has a hell of a lot about him. It would be a mistake not to give him a proper chance. Veronin's signing is the final nail in his LFC coffin. Was never really gonna return. Edited March 4, 2007 by RafaShanks

Fair enough, but I'm worried that any striker Rafa signs will not be the same for us as they were for other teams and the reason we signed them in the place.
Guest Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 SP is the classic case of 'small fish in big pond' failure and 'big fish in small pond' success. Huelva is a small pond - smells too

yellow jumper Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 strength and pace count for more in england than they do in spain. i like pongolle, but not sure where you'd fit him in. does he have the pace to get in behind? or the strength/finishing to be a penalty area striker. think both torres and villa would be expensive gambles, but at the very least they're quick.
Suth Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 strange argument, I reckon pongolle is quicker than both Villa and Torres
