...for me a poor piece of defending by Carragher.

He allowed Drogba to take a 40 yard ball down on his chest, then gave him 3 or 4 yards in which to turn and shoot. Carra didn't even lift his leg up to block the shot, which for me was a very poor piece of defending.

He wasn't anywhere near tight enough, or Drogba wouldn't have been allowed to get a clean strike on goal.

Carra wasn't three or four uyards off him, he was up his a*** and didn't expect that piece of s*** to shoot with his left foot, let alone like that. Just a great goal, blaming Carra is a joke.

Drogba was going backwards as he hit that shot, and he did it quickly. Carra was tight enough on him, it was just one of those WTF moments that came outta nowhere

Leo, if you see the goal again you will see that Carra is as tight as he can be when Drogba received the ball but he backs into Carra which knocks Carra back, only a couple of feet but enough to allow the turn, by the time Jamie pushed up the shot was away.

I think all credit needs to go to Drogba, a quality goal from a crap player.

Or as my Chelsea mate desribed it "a total and utter fluke".

Watch it again, carragher wasn't tight enough on him. Don't know how anyone can say he was.

He might be a c***, but he is a quality player... Get over yourselves...

He is, usually in about 4 games a season, 2 usually against us.

He is a battering ram, usually nothing more. (except the odd time he takes a 40 yard pass down with his chest and turns and fires an unstoppable shot into the top corner against one of the best defences in europe)

He was tight to him when the ball was played into him, Drogba backed into Carragher knocking him back a touch, but I think he had time to make a challenge.

I don't think he challenged him because he didn't expect him to do what he did; but I've watched it again and again and I still felt he shouild have made more effort to stop Drogba getting a shot away.

One of Carra's best attributes is how tight he gets to the forward and how many shots he blocks. I think if you asked him, Carra would be a little disappointed in himself there by his own high standards, I honestly do.

He was 20 yards out with his back to goal. Defensively I didn't think Carragher did much wrong. If he'd gone through him, it would have been a guaranteed free kick like what happened earlier in the game. It was just a brilliant turn and instant shot. Not many defenders would have prevented that.

I don't think Carra is back to his best. A fully match-fit Carra wouldn't have allowed Drogba to get the shot in.

If that had been Hyypia marking Drogba, he would have been universally blamed on this forum!

I do think that you tend to call things right and generally come across as someone who knows a bit about the game but I must admit, I'm not sure on this one.

I think Carra was getting ready to just shepherd him away from goal and nobody was expecting the kind of hooked shot Drogba produced - note the lack of a dive from Reina as evidence of that (not a criticism of him particularly a la Kirkland, just a testament to the surprise element and power of the shot). I think the more dangerous thing to do in that situation is to actually get too tight as it can sometimes make it easire for the attacker to turn sharply and get a run on goal as they spin away from you - he was facing away from goal so I was happy enough to see Carra standing back half a yard as I don't think anyone could have expected the turn and shot in one. If he'd recieved the ball in the area it would have needed to be defended differently and he would have had to get tighter. It all just happened in the blink of an eyelid and you'd probably welcome the c*** trying to do it again as 99 times out of 100 it goes miles over or wide.

Having said that, I haven't watched it as many times as you from the sounds of things!

exquisite goal but I agree with the initial post, carra should have been alot tighter and could have applied more pressure thus preventing the goal. However it's worth bearing in mind that carra, like the boss is a scared cow around these parts and is usually exempt from criticism.

I can't imagine any defender doing anything against that. Would Agger or Hyppie ? Would Rio Ferdinand have blocked him ? Would Maldini ?

It was just one of them goals, a snapshot, a piece of brilliance.

We were unlucky. Better team on the day, we'll get the 3 points at Anfield.

No fault of Carra's.

He coulndn't go straight though Drogba to get the ball and the fact that they were backing up meant that Carra's momentum took him away from Drogba just long enough for him to get his shot away. Remember Drogba took it very early on the half-volley. Just a great strike unfortunately.
