Personally I don't think we can win the league. I think we're a great cup team but not a league team.

If we could be within 3 points of the top come Jan then I might think differently but we're usually out of the running by the time we hit form which I can't understand.

We're going to win the league!

We're going to win the league!

And now you're going to believe us.. And now you're going to believe us..

well, I think after the recent issues, it was a priority to keep a clean sheet. If we can do the same against Chelsea, I will be happy.

Also, don't expect us to win the league this season, but absolutely expect us to win it next season. by then, all the players would have bedded down and know what Rafa wants.

This season expect us to play and perform better and get more from the games with the other top sides. a good run in a cup comp would be nice too.

A clean sheet against Chelsea is a must

And scoring 12 goals

I think your assessment of jumping the gun is jumping the gun a bit.

3 games in. Anything can happen. And does, with Rafa at the helm.

Unfortunately as far as winning the league goes the bar has been raised massively in the last three or four years, look at the points total of the eventual Champions. I don't think you can win the league if you lose more than two or three games all season and we've already lost one after three games. We're already in a situation where we have to get something away at Chelsea or we'll be 11 points behind the mancs, or 'only' 8 if we win the game in hand. Which would mean needing to beat them home and away and still be 2 points behind. It's a worry

The area we need to improve on is against Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd (as they're gonna be the likley challengers). We only took 4 points from 18 against them last season. Draw away with them and win at home and that's and additional 12 points for us with each of them only getting 1 point from 6.

Whinge whinge moan moan blah blah.

The title won't be decided because we lost the derby or drew away from home to a good PSV side. Three games into the league season and it's all doom and gloom FFS.

Chelsea lost 5 games last year and they too have already lost one game this year ....

THREE GAMES INTO THE LEAGUE SEASON.

True. But at the point where they actually won the league last season, they'd only lost 3 games. They lost to Blackburn and Newcastle after they'd clinched the title.

Ok, but they still won the league with 5 losses, the fact that they did more than enough to win the league and then lost twice doesn't detract from the bare facts that a team that loses 5 games and draws 4 can win the league by 9 pts thus disproving your point.

Edit : Not your point apparently but reniformis, however you argued it as though it was your point hence my mistake

I think last season was a lot to live up to. We had two great runs after a bad start. Nowadays you really can't afford a poor period as the Champions (whoever they are) very rarely lose. If we can beat Man Uts and/or Chelsea home and away we might have a chance.

I'm sort of guessing they'd have have won those last 2 games if needed.

I still think we can win it, but we got to pull our fingers out this weekend againt the Ruskies.

Thats irrelevant, the points needed to win the league were 8pts less than Chelsea achieved, therefore they could have lost 7 games and won the league.

It's seems a little frustrating that at times with during Houlliers tenure, we beat the Manc's, Arsenal and Chelsea (at home) but came unstuck at the 'lesser' teams and while we seem to have improved the latter it is the former is sometimes cited as the key to winning the league. I think the team is good enough to win the league even in some losses against the top three, we lost out because of a lack of finishing. We could well lose on Sunday and still win the league but I can't think of any other team to test our chances but the defending champions. Isn't that what all the excitement of winning the Ashes was about?

My previous post in English, apologies, I hit add instead of preview...

In Rafa's time we seem to have improved our record against poor opposition but we lost several times to the top 3 and that is sometimes cited as the key to winning the league.

I think the team is good enough to win the league and some of losses against the top three last year, could be attributed to a lack of finishing. We could well lose on Sunday and still win the league. But how else can we gauge our chances of winning the league this season other than seeing how we do against the defending champions. Isn't that what all the excitement of winning the Ashes was about? Anyone beating Australia would fancy their chances of winning the cricket world cup for example.

Am I right in thinking we only had 8 points after 8 games last season? I bet we will be ahead of that this season.

We've had a slowish start, but 3 games is nothing. Wait til we beat the Chavs and the barcodes - things will look rosy again.

not forgetting that chelsea have lost a game too.

What about arsenal? Are they really out of it are they?

It seems that people have forgotten, its one game at a time.

It was actually 10 points from our first 8. W2 D4 L2 F5 A8.

That slow start meant we were never in with a shout even though we took 72 points from our last 30 games. That's why 4 points out of our first 9 this season is disappointing. I know it's still early season but we need to get a run going very soon.
