Riise's Right Foot

My bro came up with a good insight on Johnny Riise's goal today. It all stemmed from his having no right foot. He started on a run down the right hand side, and of course he couldn't pass the ball inside, because he can't use his right foot. All he could do was keep on running, until he could see the whites of Cudocini's eyes and he could give it a whack with his left! :D

Careful, you'll be accused of slating him. (SUbject has been discussed in a couple of other threads, e.g. here).

Pennant's run was to the right, which took the defender away. This left Riise the central channel to run into then he ran out of options, the rest is history.

Riise's goal came from the fact we defend corners with everyone back. Had there been someone to pass to when he received the ball in defence i think he would have passed. As it was, he ran with it, had a couple of people quick enough to go with him and make runs wide and Chelsea failed to close him down.

Questionable keeping from Cudicini but still an excellent goal from Riise.

If Chelsea had won the header from the corner, we would have been fecked as pretty much all of our players went towards the ball, leaving two Chelsea players on the six yard line waiting for a tap in.

on Sky when he was interviewed he said something about finding himself up the pitch, looking around and he said "I tried to find a solution". Unusual thing for a footballer to say and I wondered whether it was something that Rafa has drummed into the players - always tbe thinking about what the possible options are and then choose the best solution.... seems like a Rafa type word to me and not your typical footballer speak. Thought it gave a bit of an insght to how Rafa gets the players thinking tactically for themselves.

Just pointing out that it's a minor flaw with the method we use to defend corners.

Not if we do it properly. If we defend correctly, there is no area within the penalty box where an opponent would be left in loads of space.

I dunno. Your theory would have more weight if riise hadn't selected the same solution he always does i.e hit it very very hard with his left foot

I think that he took the shot on as early as possible - a soon as he got within his range - had a lot to do with him scoring - caught Terry out who had backtracked too far before trying to close him down - and caught Cudicini wrong footed (he was trying to get his defence to watch for a run coming in on the left hand side when Riise let the shot go.

Watching it again, if Chelsea had won the header there would have been 2 Chelsea players waiting for the knock down who were not marked.

You've already said that above, haven't you?

I remember you having a go at beckham's positioning once when he scored for england

And?

the only thing his right foot did for that goal was to keep him upright while smashing the ball with his left

so yeah i suppose your right, it was all down to his right foot

I think you highlight odd things sometimes

Maybe I do :) but there's no denying that, apart from our fantastic counter attack by Riise, if we had missed the clearing header, our zonal system would have left two players unmarked. It's happened to us before.

And you and I both know that Beckham wasn't thinking to himself, "I'm going to hang around by the far post for a tap in." He was jogging back from a corner after Terry's uncharacteristic jaunt forwards and speculative punt into the box. I point out odd things because they are odd. Beckham is not renowned for his instinctive goal hanging - he was there, I was pleased he scored, but the reason he was there is because he was being fecking lazy.

I agree with this man, Essien had to track Pennant this opened up the centre for JAR. Great strike but it's more about a dodgy bit of keeping and Pennant's off the ball work than Johnny's right peg. IMO, if you showed that hole to Maradona he'd have taken the same option.

i dunno...to be fair...the ball dipped just in front of Cudicini's outstretched hands... :hooked:

not that i care a lot...but it could had happen to Reina, not in this game but throughout the season...

That's why if the ball is struck at your body you get down low and get your body behind the ball. It was poor goalkeeping but he doesn't get a game much nowadays so it's understandable.
