With the Alves deal on hold, and talk of Pennant coming in, most seem to be assuming it's a case of either/or for that right midfield job. I ain't so sure. I had info a while back that Rafa wanted two options for the right hand side, and one included the tactical option of playing Alves behind a winger against defensive teams.

I'd begun to wonder if this would happen, given that the Pennant link didn't really re-gain momentum until Alves went quiet. Then came some fairly solid rumours linking us to the attacking right-back Trablesi, which only surfaced when the Alves deal stumbled. Doesn't this suggest that a) Rafa does want a new right back, b) that maybe Alves was always part of that strategy, and c) therefore, a rigth winger was always being sought as well as Alves ?

Not saying that Alves wouldn't have been picked primarily at right midfield, but that he definitely wasn't intended to be the only one recruited for that side of the pitch. Perhaps Pennant was being viewed more as cover for Alves, at right wing, and also to play alongside him at the times when was being rested/injured/dropped for tactical reasons.

I may be wrong, but I don't think so.

* mods : this is a tactical topic, not a Trablesi/Alves/pennant - will they/won't they sign one. Ta. ;)

A few people discussed the idea of having attacking fullbacks and wingers on both flanks, it does seem like Rafa's been working towards it. It would create more opportunities for us to get in behind teams and hopefully utilise Crouch or whoever the feck we sign better, but I hope Finnan doesn't end up with too peripheral a role, as he's been essential to the defensive solidity. As has Riise, who has improved that half of his game immensely. Now if he only had a right leg.

what about Krompy?

Sh*t/leaving ?

I don't think it would. I think new right 'wing back' (Alves, Trabelsi) and new right winger (Alves/Pennant etc) would share the two right sided positions with Finnan. Even without legislating for injuy he'd still see plenty of action.

He's certainly not sh*t and as yet there seems to be no sign of him leaving.

No he's not sh*t, but he's not 'very good' now is he ? There's nothing offical says he's going but plenty of rumour, including from his Elisha-ship. Also, why the Trabelsi links ? do you think they're fantasy ? Why would we even consider Trabelsi if Kromkamp was staying ?

i think rafa wants both pennant and alves for the RM spots.

trabelsi as cover to finn

krompy a chance to earn a few quid from, cos trabelsi is being brought in for free.

Garcia will be our super-sub

still need another striker though.

considering various solid reports that brum owe us money on heskey, pennat is an LFC boy-hood fan we will need to spend another 27mill tops.(12mill RW) 12MILL(ST) (3MILL PENNAT)

Do we have the money??

We already spent 6.5(bellamy), 2mill (palletta) from our kitty, earned 3mill from nando, maybe earn another 7mill selling all deadwood including krompy/dudek etc

perhaps it can be done.

C'MON RAFA!!

Actually I think he IS very good for a squad player/backup.

the likes of Dudek and Krom aren't deadwood.

Kromp could be sold pretty easily, cos he's a decent young player - and probably not on a stupid wage like some genuine 'deadwood' that this club is still trying to get rid of years down the line.

Then it wil look like rafa has really lost hope in signing alves, which i dont believe, but iif so he may be gambling that pennant alone can give us the necessary width down the right, knowing full well that gerrard/garcia can play there if pennant fails.

for the record i dont believe the joaquin rumours are true. if he leaves betis they will ask a s***load of money for him as he is their only prized asset, plus if he leaves he will certainlly prefer madrid.

agreed, by deadwood i meant that they can easily be replaced by LFC with the aim of making some profit from their transfers.

I think we need better than that.

I think Finnan/Alves/Pennant for the rigth side feels a whole lot better than Finnan/Kromkamp/Pennant. The bonus is that we could still probably offset some of the Alves fee by selling Kromkamp for £3m-ish.

Trabelsi wouldn't be much of an improvement over Kromkamp. But if we can buy one for nothing and sell the other for a few mill or as part of a swap then it'd be worth it

I think Kromkamp has shown more than enough at rb to suggest he's good enough. But I wouldn't be surprised if he was only ever bought to be used a bargaining chip later on

I think you're more less right. Trabelsi for free, and trade Kromkamp is good business.

I would imagine many managers are waiting for the Italian corruption case to be decided. There could be a mass of quality players looking for new clubs.

I haven't been keeping tabs on that. Anyone know when a decision is expected?

Posted

Think that's exactly what the manager is going for. Only thing I wonder about is whether he'd be satisfied with the option of Garcia, a player who cuts in, at RM with Alves behind knowing he can bomb on into that space rather than signing Alves and another chalk on boots merchant. Can only think we've got a rather heavy squad if we sign another forward, a right back and a right mid and can't quite see how both Kewell and Garcia can stay and get a decent number of games.

Posted

Possibilities. I reckon we'll see more rotation this season now that Rafa has his type of player in as back up.

Totally agree with that and that's why he needs the fourth centre mid (I know you're insistent about Aurelio but if he were the sort of player that could cover Xabi then surely that'd be his position?) but I'd just feel there was one too many in that shake up unless he just sees himself as needing Garcia totally spare as it were. As well as Zenden.

I think that as he builds this squad in his image we're at the stage where players have to justify their paypackets and for that reason I can see Kewell going due to his inconsistent fitness however harsh that might be.

Posted

I'm not saying Aurelio definitely will, but I think he'll play a bit there if we don't get another in so we're not as desperate as we would've been had he not signed.

Agree about departures, I'd be surprised if there aren't 3 or 4 more. That's the only thing that's been worrying me about this summer, that we'll be left with a few players we don't want or need.

The likes of Warnock, Traore and Dudek haven't been seriously linked anywhere have they?

Dudek has - anyone from Feyenoord, Ajax, Benfica, Wroclaw Lodz and Lens have asked about him. Nothing so far has been heard aroun here so far as I've seen about Traore or Warnock.

I think that's true. I think one of Garcia or Kewell will become surplus. Kewell's future depends on his fitness. I'd see us having a job shipping him given that he'd find it difficult to pass a medical. Although Rafa really likes Luis I wonder if the possibility of a decent fee for him could be attractive.

Who are Wroclaw Lodz, Fyds?

I've heard of Wizdev Lodz and Slask Wroclaw, have the two teams merged?
