i'm pretty sure his contract expires this summer. four year deal, signed in summer 2002. he's going to end up at bloody toulouse or somewhere. what a waste.

Don't think either contract are up until next summer mate. Still, only one more year to go.

Wouldn't it be funny if he actually adapted to Rafa's style and looked the player we thought we'd bought....

...and for him to decide to leave because he'd been treated so poorly.

I was thinking the same, played just off the main striker.

I think the Cheyrou Ship has long sailed lads ;)

Plus, he was one of just a select group of players that Rafa didn't even want to take on that first pre-season trip to the US, which was always a defnining moment! Cheyrou, Diouf and Vignal - chucked out without a moments hesitation from Rafa.

Diao is a good lad, hence him coming in to say hello. Rafa is not the most personable chap with everyone though.

well, he was playing for the other side after all....

Even better was, when we played Pompey away last game of the season, Rafa was giving our players a pre match talk in the changing room, Salif Diao walked in. Rafa just looked at him stunned ' No, no, no, no, no, you must go, you go' Whilst physically pushing him out of the room backwards, apparently Diao was looking over Rafas head at the players in a sort of 'help' way. Needless to say none of our players said a word!

:D

the mental image that creates is just genius.

Technicolour hindsight though, though Stevie - at the time, he looked like a great buy.

Diao and Cheyrou are meant to be on big money as well (30k a week I think for Cheyrou).

not for five bloody year contracts though. that's madness. four years max surely on an untried, unproven player from a lesser league?

Exactly. Hardly like Cheyrou and Diao wouldn't have signed 4yrs...they were not as in demand as, say, Igor.

5 year contracts were the norm back then at almost all clubs.

Assuming that's true - and I don't know anything about it - being the norm doesn't make it good practice. We're not required to do what every other club does.

Just making the point - and France wasn't considered a "lesser league" in this context.

Stevie's point is well-taken, though. We were signing an espoir, not Zidane. Offering someone of that age and experience such a long and expensive contract strikes me as careless.

It's not the length of contract that is disturbing, it's the amount we over paid in buying them and wages.

It's all those things in combination. An extra year of contract at only 10k a week (less than Cheyrou was paid I suspect) amounts to 500k, no small amount.

Yes but cheaper the wages easier for someone else to take a player off our hands if it doesn't work out. I'm guessing the reason we've still got the likes of Cheyrou and Diao on our books is the stupid wages their on. No one else will pay it and they won't leave unless we pay them off.

He was 24 - far from an espoir - and had just performed excellently in the Champions League and received recognition from his country. Almost the ideal candidate for a 5 year contract.
