Sammy Lee is to leave England's World Cup training camp to have talks with Charlton over their managerial vacancy (Mirror).

I wish him all the best, hope he gets it.

While I'd love to see Sammy do well and get out of the clutches of Allardyce, I do think whoever takes the Charlton job is on a hiding to nothing and I can easily see them being relegated over the next couple of seasons.

its one of those places where the chairman doesn't spout off to the media, its well run, they seemingly finds (mid-table club type) funds should the manager want them and lets the manager get on with the job in hand.. think it'd be a cracking place for him to get his first job and you never know - if he takes them on and proves he knows his stuff he could end up back here in 15 years when Rafa retires!

Yes to the first part, no to the second.

I remember reading somewhere, round about the time Sammy left Liverpool, that he really wasn't/isn't much of a coach at all - that he wasn't particularly highly thought of at Anfield in that role.

Any truth in that?

you wouldn't like to see Sammy become Liverpool manager one day? it was a tongue in cheek comment from myself but if he does well and takes Charlton forward into Europe, lands a decent size job as a consequence and proves himself adept there then one day i can see it could happen.. wouldn't bother me..

from what he told my mate in an interview he was asked to stay but felt, as he was part of Houllier's regime, he had to make the break.. said it broke his heart like..

I think Rafa is a mould breaker. Unless it's someone from within the current set-up, I just don't see us having an English manager (particularly from our past) for many years to come. Nothing actually against Sammy who's a lovely feller.
