I agree with the original post FWIW. To me it seems that he starts nervously and usually has a Momo moment early on in the game but improves as the game progresses - noticed it against Newcastle and thought Saturday was similar. As for spotting a pass: wasn't there one occasion where he put Kewell (or somebody - it was definitely on the left though) through with a beautifully weighted pass over the defense?

Pretty much what I wanted to say. From a business point of view, what you need is top 4 + a cup now & then. Why risk extra investment which you may or may not reap benefits from?

I don't think there's much difference between first and fourth in money terms, so the "they need success to make money" argument does not hold much water IMO. From what I know about American sports there are lots of owners who are happy to keep their teams reasonaby competitive without going to the extra effort needed to win championships. Again, in money terms, this makes sense: as long as the stadium is full and the TV money's coming in, everything is hunky dory.
