The irony is that Simao has his own reputation as a wide boy. He was mysteriously barely played after moving to Barcelona, and there are all sorts of rumours flying around about his behaviour. He's now captain and star of his team, and is playing well. He has never performed in a major league, and is exactly the sort of player who might struggle to adapt. On the other hand Pennant has kept his head down and pulled out a great season in this league, during the tenure of a reportedly absolutely shambolic Steve Bruce, and without giving himself airs. He also actually wants to play for us enough that he's willing to wait as we fail in buying our primary target (Simao has never expressed any desire), and will cost less than half, allowing us to spend the money on another top class player (a £7m surplus).
