The reason he has been in the team for the last few years, is mainly because he is reasonably competent. Not s**** but not great. Just good enough so that the manager can address other, more important, areas of the team while "making do" with Riise at left back. Hopefully, we've now addressed the issues in those other positions and we get a really good 1st team left back. As good as Finnan is on the right. I'd keep Riise though, his versatility is useful as a squad player, he's never injured and looks one of the fittest players in the squad. Also - has Aurelio stayed fit last season, I think he'd have played left back in the final. He was starting to do really well.

As i said - didn't influence the league so much in the old days whether you care to acknowledge it or not. The game might have changed but the underlying rules haven't. Nor has the need to bed in new players, get a good start, be confident and fit etc etc etc.

We got the the Champions league final? No idea how old you are, but back in the day when we were winning everything, I am sure I remember that we often got beat quite a lot pre-season and then went on to humiliate most of the teams we come up against when the real thing started. Pre-season games obviously weren't on telly then. I agree that last night was promising and hope there's more to come, but pre-season results (and performances) don't have a great deal of impact on the real thing.

Kuyt seemed to be furthest forward most of the time when Voronin was on, but then dropped back when Torres came on. Which was nice. Or a desire to do something impressive on his first appearance. Time will tell.
