My dad used to be thrilled by what he called Dalglish’s ‘football intelligence’, by which he didn’t mean IQ, more that ability to read the instant - knowing exactly what was the best option, in a millisecond.
I have never seen (since my first match in April 1972) a regular Liverpool first-teamer who has less of this than Nuñez. Over the last three years I have read on this forum about his presence, his physicality, and no end of excuses. There have even been some whispers about keeping him since he recently scored a goal in a pre-season friendly against a second-tier team.
One thing Jürgen had plenty of was a belief in his own ability to turn raw material into something great. Please can we just agree that on this occasion he was absolutely mistaken. Nuñez is not and never was good enough. His attitude eventually matched his football ability. The price paid for him makes it worse. I just hope the club can fool some club into taking him off our hands. I never ever want to see him play for us again.
