I do take your point. The I only thing I would say is that the lads you mention were starters/subs in the days when there was only one sub. Squads were smaller and when they were no longer starters or subs, they were moved on. I just don’t see these lads ever being starters in our best XI. They’re evidently slower of foot and - just as importantly - slower of thought than Gini or Gravenberch.

Nice performance last night. However, I think this is right. I’ve reluctantly concluded that these two just aren’t ever going to be quite at the level we need to challenge for the title and the European Cup (yes, I’m also as old as Elliott, Scanlon and Qansah combined). Don’t think so. We’re different from City, Chelsea, PSG and Newcastle in that we have a history and a world-wide profile.
