  6. Its difficult but you have to accept that there as some Liverpool fans who, if Brendan Rogers came up with a the secret of ever lasting life, they'd complain that he was putting undertakers out of business.

  12. He's repeatedly driven Liverpool to victory through his commitment and skill but he's nowhere near the class of a Maradona, Messi, Cryuff or Zidane.

  14. Ronaldo had a chance with Portugal during the summer and he didn't take it. Deciding to take the last penalty in the shootout was all about his ego rather than what was best for his team. If he had been focused on that, he would have been one of the first three penalty takers but that would have denied him his chance of the ultimate footballing pop shot. True greatness is ultimately defined by a players contribution to the team. Maradona remains for the moment the best of all time because he dragged relatively mediocre squads to victory through his ability and sheer force of will. Argentina would never have won the World cup in 86 without him and I doubt Napoli would have achieved what they did if he'd been concerned with his own ego/achievements in the way that Ronaldo is. That's not to suggest that Ronaldo isn't head and shoulders above just about every other one of his contemporaries. He plainly is but he has never, for me, demonstrated that special something that makes him a true great. He doesn't have the ability to make you dream in the way Maradona, Zidane and Messi have.

  19. One of my favourite footballing evenings ever was seeing him play for Madrid against Malaga at La Rosaleda. Half time and Malaga were two up. The place was going absolutely mental. 5 minutes before the end Zidane was taken off. In the second half he'd scored twice, made the other, headbutted a Malaga player and taken another out. Everyone in the ground stood up and applauded him as he went off.
  20. Some alternate views: Zidane is the master. Over the past 10 years, there's been no-one like him, he has been the best player in the world.Pelé, 2006 [2] He dominates the ball, he is a walking spectacle and he plays as if he had silk gloves on each foot. He reminds me a bit of myself, although I was a bit quicker. He makes it worthwhile going to the stadium -- he's one of the best I have ever seen.Alfredo Di Stefano [3] Zidane is one of the greatest players in history, a truly magnificent player.Franz Beckenbauer, 2006 [4] Zidane is unique. The ball flows with him. He is more like a dancer than a football player.Franz Beckenbauer, 2003 [5] Technically, I think he is the king of what's fundamental in the game - control and passing. I don't think anyone can match him when it comes to controlling or receiving the ball.Michel Platini, 2006 [6] He is the best player I've seen... Playing alongside him was a crazy thing! Supporters arrived earlier at the Bernabeu just to see him warm-up.Roberto Carlos, 2010 [7] I would give up five players to have Zidane in my squad.Cesare Maldini, 1998 [8] You look at Zidane and think 'I've never seen a player quite like that'. Diego Maradona was a great player. Johan Cruyff was a great player. They were different - but with similarities. What sets Zidane apart is the way he manipulates a football, buying himself space that isn't there. Add his vision and it makes him very special.Kevin Keegan, 2000 [9] In France, everybody realized that God exists, and that he is back in the French international team. God is back, there is little left to say.Thierry Henry, 2005 [10] He thinks in one second and does it the next. He is a special player, one who is original and exceptional. He creates space where there is none. Only the very best players can do that. No matter where he gets the ball or how it comes to him, Zidane can get out of trouble. His imagination and his technique are amazing.Edgar Davids, 2000 [11] I really enjoy watching Zinedine Zidane. His elegance of movement on the pitch and his skills are uncanny. Apart from being an impressive player, he is also very humble and very likeable as a person. A great man.Rivaldo, former Brazilian footballer currently playing for Bunyodkor.(Source) Zidane is probably the best player there has been in the past 20 years ... France have recovered the best Zidane and they have progressively grown throughout this tournament.Marcello Lippi, manager of the World Cup-winning Italian team, 3 July 2006 The greatest player of the past 20 years? It has to be Zidane. He had everything. You never needed to tell him anything as he did it all by himself and knew what was expected.Marcello Lippi, September 2011 [12] Zidane has won that award because of what he has done on the pitch - he was the best ... I have always admired Zidane ... In fact I have one of his shirts in my closet - we exchanged our shirts after a Juventus v Perugia game.Marco Materazzi, Italian footballer and subject of Zidane's infamous headbutt, talking about the latter's Golden Ball win.
