Anticipation has its own particular je ne sais quoi, certainly. Waiting on the stairs before you can go and open your Christmas presents. Although when you've been through it 40 times and the event itself is only getting more frustrating and disappointing, the thrill of anticipation tends to disappear.

I wanted a new manager, as you say that hasn't happened. I'm pleased we've made signings and pleased we did those signings early, which is important. I'm unconvinced about any of them, bar Milner who should do a decent job. The thing that is going to lift the gloom is actually, y'know, winning competitive football matches once the season starts. If you're asking me to get excited about close season events, you're going to be bitterly disappointed.

We had the unquestionably third best player in the world. We have nothing and nobody like that now. And as for 'a lot of new good ones', we'll see how true that is. Sorry if this makes you yawn, seems only blind optimism is worth staying awake for.
