Unhappy hat-tricks
1961 - Winger Kevin Lewis scored a treble in our Second Division fixture at Bristol Rovers, but we still went down 4-3. Bobby Jones bagged a brace as Peter Hooper netted the last of his seven goals against us, with Harold Jarman also on target.
1908 - Joe Bache scored a hat-trick for Aston Villa in their 5-1 top-flight victory over us at Villa Park, three of his nine strikes against the reds, with our goal coming from inside-left Ronald Orr on his reds debut. Harry Hampton netted two of his fifteen goals past us.
1931 - Jimmy Dunne bagged all four goals for Sheffield United as we lost 4-1 at Bramall Lane, with Harold Barton nabbing our consolation. Dunne scored a total of eleven goals against the reds.

Happy birthdays
2003 – Two reds youngsters were born on this day, with winger Harvey Elliott coming into the world in Chertsey. He became the Premier League’s youngest ever player in May 2019 when he appeared for Fulham aged sixteen and thirty days. He joined the reds two months later, netting nine times in 108 first-team appearances before his 21st birthday, already helping us to claim two League Cups and the FA Community Shield. On the same day, left-back James Norris was born in Liverpool. He made his senior bow at Aston Villa in the League Cup in December 2019, signing pro terms in June 2020.
1967 – Keeper Chris Pile was born in Huyton, Liverpool, signing pro terms with the reds on his seventeenth birthday. He only made the first-team bench once, for the ill-fated European Cup Final in 1985. He moved on to Tranmere Rovers in 1987, later moving to New Zealand.

Wembley denied
1979 - Manchester United denied us a place at Wembley, winning our FA Cup Semi-final replay at Goodison thanks to a late Jimmy Greenhoff goal, with both sides hitting the woodwork. They went on to lose an end-to-end final to Arsenal. This was Emlyn Hughes’ 665th and final reds game.

Heading towards Kyiv
2018 – We beat Manchester City 3-0 at Anfield in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Quarter-final, with Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mané all on target in a blistering opening half hour.

Disappointment in North London
1953 – We lost a top-flight encounter 5-3 to Arsenal at Highbury. Laurie Hughes put through his own net, with Louis Bimpson, Alan A’Court and Billy Liddell on target for the reds. Don Roper netted two of his five goals past us, with Doug Lishman scoring one of his four and Peter Goring also on the scoresheet.
2015 - We were thumped 4-1 at the Emirates Stadium, with Héctor Bellerín, Mesut Özil and Alexis Sánchez all scoring before the break. Jordan Henderson converted from the spot with Emre Can dismissed before Olivier Giroud bagged a late fourth, one of his eight goals past us to date.

An eventful meeting with the Mancs
1988 - We shared six goals with Manchester United on Easter Monday at Anfield, falling behind to an early Bryan Robson strike who later added the last of his seven goals past us. Colin Gibson was sent off for bringing Steve Nicol down after Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie and Steve McMahon had given us a two-goal lead, but United came back to level the match by the end, with Gordon Strachan celebrating his late equaliser with an imaginary cigar in front of the Kop, after a second Robson goal. It was after this game that Kenny Dalglish famously told reporters that they would get more sense out of his six-year old daughter Lauren than United boss Alex Ferguson, who was moaning about the referee.

Ton up for Shanks
1964 - Bill Shankly secured his hundredth League win as reds boss, in his 184th game in charge. Ian Callaghan was on target and Alf Arrowsmith bagged a brace in a 3-0 defeat of Manchester United at Anfield.

Stalemates with the Blues
We have faced Birmingham City twice in the top flight on this day in history, each time ending 1-1.
2010 – Steven Gerrard was on target at St. Andrews, with David N’Gog spurning three promising openings after replacing the exhausted Fernando Torres with 25 minutes remaining. Left-back Emiliano Insúa played his 62nd and final reds game.
1925 – Fred Baron struck at Anfield, with George Briggs bagging one of his ten goals against the reds. Jack Jones missed a penalty for the visitors after Bill Cockburn had handled in the box.

2023 – We were held to a goalless draw by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Jim signs on
1934 – Full-back Jim Harley signed from Hearts Of Beath. He made 131 senior appearances, helping us to claim the first post-war League title in 1947.

Beating City again and again
1983 - We secured our sixth consecutive win at Maine Road, and fifth in the League, as Graeme Souness and Alan Kennedy added to a David Fairclough brace in our 4-0 win.

300 up for Ged
2004 - We played our 300th match since Gérard Houllier took sole charge as we thumped Blackburn Rovers 4-0 at Anfield, equalling our record defeat of the Lancashire side. Michael Owen bagged a brace and Andy Todd notched an own goal before Emile Heskey added a late fourth.

England debutants
1962 - Roger Hunt scored on his England debut, as Austria lost a friendly 3-1 at Wembley.
1984 - Alan Kennedy won his first cap as Northern Ireland lost 1-0 in the British International Championships at Wembley. Sammy Lee also played, in front of a crowd of just 24,000. Meanwhile, Mark Lawrenson, Michael Robinson and Ronnie Whelan all faced ex-red Avi Cohen as Israel beat the Republic of Ireland in a friendly in Jaffa.

Cox and Ned’s day
1903 - Winger Jack Cox won his third and final cap at Bramall Lane as England beat a Scotland side skippered by his clubmate Alex Raisbeck 2-1 in the British International Championships. Future reds keeper Ned Doig won his fifth and last cap for Scotland.
1904 - Cox played for the Football League in their 2-1 win over a Scottish League side.
1896 - Doig won his first cap as a Sunderland player, and third in total, as Scotland beat England 2-1 at Celtic Park.

Final strikes
1903 – Inside-forward Edgar Chadwick struck his seventh and final reds goal in our 3-1 top-flight defeat at Grimsby Town. Duncan Ronaldson nabbed a brace for the home side, with Fred Rouse also netting.
1936 – Bob Glassey bagged his last two goals for the club as we were held to a 2-2 draw by Middlesbrough at Anfield, to reach four strikes in nine outings in total. Benny Yorston struck one of his five goals past us, with Bob Baxter also on the scoresheet.

Managerial moves
2002 - Jan Mølby took charge at Hull City, having resigned from Kidderminster Harriers six days previously. He was at Boothferry Park for six months before being sacked, having only won two of his seventeen games in charge.
1983 - Larry Lloyd was sacked as Wigan Athletic boss. He had been in charge for two years, leading them out of the basement division in his only full season.
2006 - Ex-reserves defender Richard Money left as Head Coach at Newcastle Jets in Australia.

Defeat in Dubai
1989 - We lost to Celtic in the Dubai Champions Cup, played in the United Arab Emirates’ capital. The game ended 1-1, with John Aldridge equalising after Mark McGhee put the Bhoys ahead, and went to penalties after extra time. Unfortunately, we lost the shoot-out 4-2. Pat Bonner saved Steve McMahon’s spot kick before substitute Steve Staunton hit the post.

2009 – Yossi Benayoun struck the only goal of our Premiership trip to Fulham very late on to take us back to the top of the table.
1994 – We drew 1-1 with Wimbledon at Selhurst Park with Jamie Redknapp on the scoresheet. Gary Elkins bagged a deflected last-minute leveller for the Dons from a free kick.
1959 – We beat Derby County 3-0 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield. Jimmy Melia struck twice with Billy Liddell also on target.

Good news for the youngsters
2002 - Young reds John Welsh and Jon Otsemobor were both named in the England Under-19’s squad to face Lithuania in a European Championships play-off later in the month. Meanwhile, winger Richie Partridge put pen to paper on a new two-year Anfield deal.

Brad the dad
2012 – Keeper Brad Jones became a father to his second son, Nico Luca. Sadly, Luca, his first, had died aged just six, five months earlier.

Also in international action
1908 – Keeper Sam Hardy played for England as they drew 1-1 with Scotland in the British International Championships at Hampden Park.
1989 – Future red István Kozma featured in Hungary’s 3-0 friendly defeat of Switzerland in Budapest.
2015 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-16’s as they drew 1-1 with the Ivory Coast in the Montaigu Tournament in France.
2023 – Future red Trey Nyoni played for England Under-16’s as they beat the Central African Republic 3-2 at St. George’s Park.
