This was a good result for us

That's great way to rationalise things...we are out, and it's a f***ing terrible result, for the future or not!

This isn't spin. I'm being realistic.

We need 2 new strikers and a right wing. We have Paletta and Agger who will put Traore so far down the pecking order he'll be training with the Under 11s.

We know Cisse and Moro will be on their bike...what more can this game show us?

Before tonight I'm sure Rafa already knew where we were lacking. Almost certainly the board would have known too. But seeing the deficiency so clearly might just create the added impetus to back Rafa in doing what much be done.

I feel we need a new first choice strike partnership to come in, if funds can be found.

Crouch should be used in away games and as an option off the bench. Fowler should also be retained, but as a back up. A new first choice pairing is needed, with Cisse and Morientes to be sold.

Kinda agree with this but whether we won or not, surely Morientes and Cisse would have been off anyway.

I disagree a little. Cisse gone yes..Moro not (until tonight).

Good managers know what is missing before a result like this. Rafa is a good manager. This was just a lousy result and a lousy performance. No silver lining. Just pain and misery. Deal with it.

All I'm saying is, everything that usually goes wrong for us did and everything we do right did.

So why on earth is today's result a point of enlightenment? WHY? Something that usually fails has failed again? Any idiot sees that. A good manager senses it the first or second time, not the nth 'usual' time. This is just a plain and simple lousy result.

I dont want to turn this topic into a "who's going and who's staying" discussion.

We all know who should go.

All I'm really saying is that we saw our entire season's problems and mistakes rolled into 90 mins today.

We should have bought a back-up centre half in before August 31st.

Lousy result short term I agree. But as I say..its our season's mistakes rolled into one and will give us a great idea as to what needs changing for next season.

Not really a justification of the thread though, is it? Whatever happened tonight we already knew was a problem. Nothing gained, nothing positive - just a miserable exit.

We have played all these CL games and then went out with a wimper tonight. This loss will take a lot out of these lads tonight. It's been a long season but we have always had the CL hopes keeping us going. Now let's hope the FA Cup and 2nd spot can motivate them.

You are right but i'm trying to distance myself from some of the crap being spouted in here after the result.

Some JD and an optimistic outlook will help so could you kindly refrain from trying to piss on my silver lining ;)

I doubt Rafa needed to be knocked out of the champs league to know he's f***ed up with all four of our strikers.

It's his one really really poor area so far. Hopefully he'll get advice on what's needed over the coming months.

Christ on a bike I'm trying to bring a little optimism to the party and all I get is doom and gloom.

well f***ing point out the fact that we've got a midfield that can pass and create chances then. Not some form of f***ing b******s. We're out which reduces our funding and means our profile isn't as high as it would have been had we won the thing again which actually makes it harder in the transfer market which seems to be what you are talking about.

That's a bit provocative! Who should Rafa get this advice from? I'm sure he knows what he's doing!

I also believe that Rafa signed 3 strikers (if we are to believe Parry, who said Cisse was already a done deal prior to Rafa).

Fowler - a good signing for free. He offers a goal threat (shame his efforts have been chalked off so far though). He also links play very well and is intelligent. An excellent free signing IMO.

Crouch - he's about par for me. He does some things well but is not quite the quality to be in a first choice pairing IMO. Should be on the bench next season, ready to come on for the last 20-30 minutes if a different plan is needed, and also able to play in certain away games.

Mori - a big disappointment.

Cisse and Crouch to be moved on. A new first choice striker partnership to be brought in (funds permitting!), with Crouch and Fowler offering something as back-ups.
