Google Nexus 5

Recommended Posts

Apologies for starting another phone related topic but I couldn't find the previous android phone based thread.

Does anyone on here own a Google Nexus 5? I would appreciate an honest assessment. I have an iPhone 5 at the mo that's on it's last legs and I am if the view to give up on the apple brand and move over to android (value for money for android devices being an attraction).

If the google nexus 5 isn't the one to go for can anyone recommend another high spec android phone? I want to buy it offline as I am on a sim only contract with three for a period of 12 months.

Any advice is mucho appreciated

I've got one and I love it, but the battery isn't the best. Though if you don't batter it, it can get through the day ok.

The next Nexus phone is supposedly only weeks away. Might be worth holding on for that.

Ah thanks mate will wait for the nexus 6 if that's the case

There's no release date yet, but rumoured to be October/November.

The new Moto X is about to go on sale as well.

Reviews for the Moto X havent been great - currently have a SGS3 and am thinking about getting a Sony Xperia Z3 compact, it has a good spec, good reviews (especially battery life) and is similar in size to the IP6 (non plus).

I've got a Nexus 5 - came to it from an iPhone 5s, and I absolutely love it.

Size is just about perfect. Battery life is as good as the 5s was. Camera isn't quite as good, but that's it.

I like some of the LG, HTC, and Samsung phones, but the Nexus phones almost always run so much smoother with the stock Android software.

As for the Nexus 6 - it's apparently going to be a 5.9" screen, which is feckin massive, so if phablets aren't your thing I'd stick with the Nexus 5. Can't beat it for the price.

I've got a Nexus 5 and like it a lot. Its my first android phone after having iphones for years.

I personally think the usability is a little bit better on iphones and the camera is a bit better, but to me that doesnt ad up to double the price.

It works well, is fast and has reasonable battery life

I lost mine on a disastrous night out in Dublin over the summer but I do like it a lot. The camera could have been better, frankly and the battery was no world beater but it was as good as the competition on nearly all levels.

But as someone else said the 6 is not far off. It's quite simple for me, in that the Nexus line's stock android is the main reason to buy it. Runs fast, updated when it needs to be, excellent specs. And best of all, it's affordable enough to buy for cash and then get on a good SIM only deal that you can bin off any time you want. No absurd contracts.

I would consider a Sony Z3, I like the promise of 2 days battery, I like the waterproof bit and I like the design but Sony load it down with so much Sony s*** software that I can't be bothered.

I haven't used iPhone for 3 or 4 years now, and I never owned one so my perspective is ignorant of that. I am guessing that whatever Apple software/ecosystem things you might miss after getting an Android phone can be solved by some app or other.

Rumour is that the new Nexus is a Motorola, possibly based on the X. I'm planning on changing my Nexus 4 and for me its either the Moto X or the new Nexus, whichever is better. If the Nexus does turn out to be a 6 inch phone then its the X for me.

Any negative reviews for the Moto X have largely been because of the battery life and camera quality. I'm not too bothered about the camera and Android L is going to mean longer battery life for all phones anyway.

Motorola phones aren't loaded down with manufacturer crap and receive android updates at roughly the same time as the Nexus phones.

Another possible option I was looking at was the HTC one M8? Seems to have excellent reviews online

great phone, moved to it from the samsung s4 a few months back, and the HTC feels better built, the battery life is better than the S4 as well

I went from an iPhone to a Nexus and actually back again - what I didn't like was 1) the battery life, whereas on the iPhone I was getting three to four days easily enough, on the Nexus was scrapping a single day use - probably different people use different things so have different experiences but it might be related to: 2) "Privacy" - the Nexus seems to want to share everything I do with everybody; obviously that's how Google are getting their money (and this may be more of a google issue than android per se) but it just annoyed me no end so ultimately I switched back to Apple where I could see no data was being shared and, as I mentioned, the phone stayed charged throughout a weekend no problem.

The Nexus 5 is a great phone apart from the battery life. It annoys me having to charge every night.

Having said that, the new version of android (L) has been tested on the Nexus 5 and it's apparently made the battery life last 36% longer, and that figure may increase before it's officially released. That's supposed to be on Nov 1st.

I was thinking of moving from the Nexus 5 because of the battery life but now I'm going to wait until it's got the new OS.

Do either of you have the magnetic charger? It's ace. I've got it plugged in at my desk, so when I'm working I just stick the phone on top of it - don't have to worry about plugging it in and unplugging every time I use my phone, just lift it off the magnetic charger like I would lift it off the desk. Never have battery life issues because of this, it's ace.

Been an android user for years... Nexus 5 is a fantastic phone... I don't seem to battery issues at all... I put my phone on charge at night and always start the day with a full battery and it easily lasts. Camera is much better since the updates.

Only thing that gripes me is the audio quality using headphones... It's not loud enough.

If your new to Android... Best get a nexus device
