Bands with two drummers

How does that work then? Is it like Rhythm guitar and lead guitar? One doing rhythm and one percussion? Or is it just a case of creating a heavier, layered drum sound?

 

I went to see Modest Mouse tonight and they had two drummers and at times two bass players (one bass guitar and one double bass) How hard must it be to keep the beat in that setup?

 

Can any musicians on here explain it in layman's terms?
