Decking

Recommended Posts

Following on from my "french doors topic" from a couple of weeks ago.....

Are any of you creative in design / decking specialists / gardening enthusiasts or any other phrase which could describe someone who basically help me with designing a deck for my garden?

I'm s*** at design and don't mind admitting it. I'll be grand actually building it once it designed but I don't have a creative bone in my body.

not being funny mate but don't you just draw a line or put pegs with string around the area you want to deck, measure it, buy the decking, balustrade, steps, varnish and any other required kit and get started?

yeah that's pretty much it but I don't just want 21 square metres of wood. I'd like a split deck with the odd feature to break it up etc. I have an idea of what I want I just want someone to do it for me ;-)

Decking is evil. Looks good for a month and then it just turns nasty. Stay away if you can.

To be honest I agree but unfortunately there is a 6 foot drop from the french doors and I have to put something up. Decking is an affordable and less permanent way to solve this problem until I can afford to extend the house or put up a more comtemporary premanent structure and landscape the garden etc.

I'm telling myself that they only become a death trap if they are neglected.

I believe there are people who do that sort of thing, I think they are called 'Landscape gardeners'.

Maybe this will help

Is this true.

Gardens i've seen with decking always tend to look very nice. Viewed some houses in Chorlton last night and one house had ticked all of the Property Ladder boxes. It was 60k more than a house of simmilar size due to the fact that they had finished every surface with white matte and had installed a new kitchen and bathroom. Garden was small but a decking area and a lawned area made it look very inviting. Not worth the mark up though.

Been toying with doing one myself, but now leaving it to next year. It's been strongly recommended to go hardwood, and not the pulp you get in garden centres, yellow balau or Ipe. It's beautiful to look at but pricey as f***, was looking close to a grand for 20 square meters.

can you get Composite Decking over there? like the stuff on this site.

we have a huge deck on the back of our house that was cedar, we switched it out in stages to this new composite stuff and it is brilliant, no rotting no scratching no maintenace and easy peasy clean up.

itis pricier than wood, but worth it down the road when you are not having to maintain the deck.
