Buying a bicycle

Right, have decided to buy his and hers bikes.

 

Went to Halfords this weekend for some advice and we got 2 conflicting pieces of advice.

 

The idea is that it'll be a mixture of on and off road riding, plus I want to be able to have the nipper on the back.

 

The 1st guy advised us to buy a hybrid bike (town and trail they call them apparently). This halfords was dead small so we decided to go to a bigger one to have a look around.

 

The 2nd guy advised us to get mountain bikes.

 

Any advice from any of the forum cyclists?
