Baby P's mother to be sentenced today

Recommended Posts

The mother of Baby P and two men will appear at the Old Bailey today to be sentenced for his death.

Defence lawyers will address Judge Stephen Kramer before he passes sentence tomorrow. The 27-year-old woman, her 32-year-old partner, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, and lodger Jason Owen, 37, each face up to 14 years in jail.

The two men were convicted in November last year of causing, or allowing, the 17-month-old's death in August 2007.

Baby Peter's mother pleaded guilty to the offence and could be entitled to up to a third off her sentence. The term will also be reduced by the 21 months she has already spent in custody.

Her boyfriend, whom Peter called "dad", faces a life sentence after being convicted on 1 May of raping a two-year-old girl. The child, like Peter, had been on the child protection register maintained by Haringey council in north London.

Baby Peter's mother was cleared of a child cruelty charge towards the girl.

The girl, now four, became the youngest person to give evidence at the court when she was cross-examined by the defence counsel. At one stage, when asked if she had told the truth, she appeared to be upset, but smiled when told her ordeal was over.

All three defendants have been warned by the judge that they face substantial prison sentences.

First time I read it, I thought it said "...to be sentenced to death..." shame, really

I saw an advert on the back of a bus this morning

"most of the children in care (or up for adoption?) in Haringey are of black african caribbean origin or dual ethnicity"

I am wondering why I care? Aaah yes, only people of black african caribbean origin are allowed to adopt kids of black african caribbean origin. Or be left in the care of Haringey council. It's a clever piece of advertising: GUILT people into becoming adoptive parents.

Well I do and thankfully so do our elected representatives.

They are fond of moats and duck islands too. Do you favour those as well?

This woman needs to go to jail and get an education. Being able to understand what she has done and living with that knowledge for the rest of her life would be a suitable punishment.

If you had kids you'd understand.

I know what you mean, a few few years ago before i became a father i would have looked at that story and though "bad ba*tards" and that would have been it but when you have children you are thinking "that could have been my daughter/son", especially when they are of a similar age as the victim. Hard to explain........

What a pompous little prat you are with your 'elected representatives'.

So you think a man who rapes a two year old little girl and subjects that poor little boy to the most horrific brutality then leaves him to bleed to death in his cot with a broken back isn't better off dead?

What is a creature of pure evil like that ever going to contribute to society? He should be put down like the animal he is, then perhaps some of the others doing similar things might think twice.

It's sickening to read about.

I don't believe in the death penalty.

Good of you to put yourself up as the judge of who deserves to live and die.

That last sentence is a winner, btw. The deterrent effect of the death penalty is constantly being demonstrated in Texas, China, Iran, etc, etc, etc.

It's a horrible case and hopefully the perpetrators will spend the rest of their lives in prison.

I don't believe that the death penalty is a deterrent in any way shape or form.

And even if it was I'd rather people like this had to spend the rest of their lives locked in a cage rather than be put to death.

So you want violent revenge? Interesting. Want to watch the execution? Does it have to be bloody and violent to satiate your cravings?

Edit: not replying to you eric, but rather Leo and the other vengeance hunters.

Interesting point to mention is that when interviewed less than 2% of criminals who were imprisoned for murder in the state of Oregon, USA between 1984 and 1990 admitted to considering the possible punishments on offer for the crime they were committing when they committed it.

I'll try and dig the report out - its in one of my text books somewhere.

That's a relief I was about to make arrangements to have you executed.

Quite the opposite actually - I wouldn't want to watch it at all.

I'd just like them to be put down behind closed doors like a rabid dog.

Realistically its the only way to stop them ever causing this kind of pain to anyone ever again, because the chances are if they go to prison they'll be out in seven to ten years to live their lives and maybe do it again if they so wish.

With regards to those statistics, I'd be interested to know if you have one on the percentage of parents who'd had their two year old daughters raped who favoured your suggestion of giving the rapist / child murderer an education then let them think about what they'd done to punish them. Good God, I'm glad you're not in charge of the justice system.

You and the likes of Des and Matty are living in a fairy make believe world with fluffy clouds and pixies where everyone lives in harmony. You've never had your child, the most precious thing in the world whom you love so much it physically hurts subjected to hideous, life destroying pain, anguish and humiliation. You've never had them violated.

You've got no experience of it yet you all behave like you're so morally superior; I find it quite nauseating to be honest, you've no experience of this kind of tragedy in the real world and no clue of how it feels to have your life destroyed by an beast like this, yet you make pathetic suggestions like the above in the belief it makes you morally just.

If the likes of this monster could be put in a dark hole and fed fish heads for the rest of their lives then fine, that kind of captivity would be OK. But as it is they'll be out in a few years, and whilst in prison they can find God, write their memoirs, play Playstation and generally live their lives whilst that poor little innocent girl has her rape hanging around her neck till the day she dies, and Baby P is in the ground with his little spine in pieces.

Yes, but spending time in a UK jail at the taxpayer's expense at an average cost per year in state jail: £25,718 and average cost in private jail: £31,502 and you condone/prefer that? A 10 year sentence keeping that poor excuse for a human being alive will cost over a £¼ million. Absolutely disgraceful.

We shouldn't be killing people because it's a cheaper option.
