Kop star Yossi Benayoun claims Liverpool have a "mental problem" trying to win the Premier League.

The title hasn't gone to the Kop since 1990 and Israel midfielder Benayoun does not envisage the drought coming to an end in the near future.

In a surprising attack on the club which pays his wages, he said: "It could be after so many years without becoming champions a mental problem has developed at the club.

"You have to remember this is the toughest League in the world and Liverpool are never going to be the favourites.

"I understand it is difficult to remain at the top, but things can change so quickly."

Benayoun, signed from West Ham last July, made 30 appearances last season and scored four goals as Rafa Benitez led the team to the Champions League semis and fourth in the Premier League. He has been linked with a move to Aston Villa in partexchange for Gareth Barry, but wants to stay at Anfield despite not fancying his team's chances of title success.

He added: "There are three or four clubs in England willing to buy me, but I want to stay at Liverpool until the end of my career.

"It really moves me when I go out on to the pitch at Anfield and the crowd start singing."

Meanwhile, Benayoun's countryman and former player Eyal Berkovic, 36, is set to become manager of Israel's Under-17s side.

Where in that article does he say the club has a mental problem or no chance of winning the league?

In the bit where he says '"It could be after so many years without becoming champions a mental problem has developed at the club" maybe?

Though you are right about the second bit, he doesn't say that we have no chance of winning the league and therefore there is absolutely nothing shocking or controversial about what he has said.

Those comments might be true if we'd come close for a few years but bottled it near the end repeatedly, but I don't even think it's got to that point yet considering we've not got anywhere near the title in the last 11 years or so...

It's the only bit of media spinning I think is worth it. When the usual hacks come in and ask, 'So do you think you can win it this year?' just say, 'Look: we plan to win every match. As many as we can. That's it. Come back in April if you want us to say anything more'. Hacks soon get bored. Otherwise we are in danger of becoming the club equivalent of England, always declaring we'll do this or that before a tournament and then disappointing.

I think until you go through the process of winning the league there will always be an element of doubt

All said and done if its meant to be earth shattering it isnt. I like Yossi so I'd probably say that anyway
