The Riquelme war.

Duo ready for Riquelme war

Monday 19 November, 2007

---------------------------------------------------------------

Inter and Juventus are ready to fight for Argentine midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme in January, but Real Madrid could pose a problem.

The gifted Riquelme is set to leave Villarreal in January, as relations with Coach Manuel Pellegrini remain frosty.

The 29-year-old scored twice in Argentina’s win over Bolivia last weekend and there could be a Derby d’Italia contest for his signature.

Roberto Mancini is looking for a replacement for the injured Luis Figo and defender Walter Samuel is hoping that his compatriot will join him at the San Siro.

“They say that Riquelme is slow and it makes me laugh,” the stopper nicknamed ‘The Wall’ remarked.

“With him the ball goes so quickly. He is a great trequartista and the kind of player you can rely on – I’d love to have him here at Inter.”

Riquelme came close to joining Atletico Madrid for around £6m in the summer and it is believed that a similar sum would be enough to secure the services of one of South America’s stars.

Juventus have reportedly been offered first refusal, but Inter are thought to have deeper pockets if a bidding war begins.

However, Spanish champions Real Madrid could step in as they have been tracking the unsettled star for over a year and the Merengues may make an offer that Riquelme is unable to refuse.

How I would love Riquelme to put on the red shirt.

Rafa prefer to play with a link player behind a front striker, why not get the best in the world in?

Imagine Torres running onto the through balls from Riquelme, it would be a match made in heaven.

Some might suggest he is too lazy to play for Rafa, but his quality on the ball, his superb vision, his excellent set pieces and his ability to create and score goals out of nothing should more than make up for a bit less hard work.

Hard work can only take you to a certain level, pure genius can take you everywhere.

as evidenced by riquelme's glittering club career.

Genius isn't worth squat if you're a lazy primadonna who thinks they're bigger than the team, which is my understanding of him.

There is no war, he wants to go back to Boca and thats it.

But I'm not having him back, the prick. Once bitten and all that....

Fantastic player but the speed of the game in England would pass him by. Plus the amount of running our other midfielders would have to do to cover him would marginalise them too much.

Maybe for a team that would set their whole side around him and gave him zero defensive responsibilities but not for us thanks.

Run all day and not score all night, thats the way we like it!

Yes, that's exactly what I said

Riqulme is not big headed, thats just a myth.

But he knows the ball will move faster than anyone can run so why waste a lot of energy doing a lot of useless running when you can get the ball to do the work instead.

Kaizer, yes he is a great player, but I always get one word in my head when i look at him, - "Veron".

I think he would not work out in the premiership, because, as people have said, the pace would pass him by.

So it's a myth that he threw his toys out of the cot?

He is a man of principles, not a sheep, I see nothing wrong with that.

If your principles lead you to be dumped from the side in a team sport, then I do see something wrong with that

What was he being so principled over, anyway?

He's a cracking player but I don't think he'd cut it in England.

The other drawback is that you would need to base your whole style of play around him, can't see Rafa going for that.

probably about the best analogy that one. veron was clearly a class player with loads of ability but needed to play in a slow league.

Unlikely given that they play two up top now to keep all the strikers happy.

I was thinking that they'd give him "zero defensive responsibilities" like they do with everyone else.

Bit like Kaizer - clearly a class poster, but needs to post on a slow forum
