the first thing you have to do is ensure you have framed the question correctly! - 2 CL Finals, 1 FA cup Final, 2 Coca Cola Cup Finals - the project has not been a failure, therefore its imperative you define success PRECISELY !

What business has cameras trained on the employees performing their duties twice a week beamed to millions around the world ?

 

What business is subject to the media glare that a club like Liverpool is subject to ?

 

What business must offer approx £100k per week to attract the top performing employees ?

 

What business has profit as secondary to winning top awards ?

 

The pressures of running a football club like Liverpool are so far removed from a profit driven business is just so vastly different that I feel debating it has no merit.

Maybe instead of having a sign reading This is Anfield, the club could consider putting it's core values up instead;

Abramovich's conduct with Chelsea is a different type of business practice, commonly known as a "tax haven" - a place (or corporation) where certain taxes are levied at a low rate or not at all. Hence why the ultra-rich tend to setup philanthropic foundations where it appears that they're just giving away money, but quite the contrary. Chelsea offers this type of haven for Abramovich, where he's not only saving taxible captial, but controlling an asset that has significantly increased in value from it's purchase price, and can be "cashed-in" at any given time. He's not as "stupid" as he is portrayed.

 

In Real's case, it's well known that the king of Spain (and hence the government) support Real Madrid. Real's poor business practice (partly due to outlandish player purchases) resulted in mammoth debt. Consequently, they sold their training ground to the City of Madrid in order to recoup. The sale price, which was in the 400 million euro region, was the subject of controversy due to the City of Madrid changing the land use prior to the completion of the sale, increasing it's value sharply.
