I reckon this lad will end up being one of Rafa's best signings, what did he cost? £2.5m? He can play anywhere across the back, is great on the ball and tough as old boots. We really don't need Heinze.

I'd agree. Seems better at LB than RB...mind you Carra used to be the same I thought.

Could well make that left-back slot his own - seems similar in style of play to Finnan in that he links up well with the midfielder in front, and gives another attacking option - with some solid defending too :)

A Rafa bargain (24yrs old for £2.2m? and can play anywhere across the back with a decent turn of pace)

Hold on ... wasn't David Hodgson on here saying a few weeks ago that Arbeola was one of Rafa's worst buys? :mischief:

Strangely as he hadn't played there in his whole career before coming to us, Arbeloa does look better at left-back to me. It's like he concentrates a bit more because he's playing out of position.

When he's played on the right I've thought he has given the ball away a bit more, and perhaps been a touch too ambitious in his play at times but it's a very minor criticism. At left-back he's been pretty much faultless.

Great signing, and I agree with him looking like proving himself on the left side, Riise, Insua and Aurelio we've got plenty of options there and don't need Heinze.

i agree he has looked pretty good at left back last few games, but he also looked bloody awful at full back towards the end of last season. too early to call really.

riise aurelio or the kid insua do not negate the need for a top flight left back like a fit heinze.

Don't forget we still have Aurelio to come back to challenge for that LB position...

heinze can also play CB. i think rafa, without declaring it, is going for broke having most if not all positions covered, prolly in case of injuries also. and rafa likes versatile players who can play in more than one positions. it's all about giving him different options for different opponents imo.

He's a quality buy, the only time he's really looked dodgy was when he's been in a reserve defence with Paletta, Insua and Hyypia.

think that's a fair comment.

When he's played in a full strength team, he's very rarely been caught out. And he's also demonstrated real attacking intent on both sides of the pitch (Arsenal home, Reading away).

I thought he'd be another Josemi/Kromkamp when we brought him in, but he looks a real bargain buy. I like his attitude as well.

Anyone else think that until Aurelio comes back that Rafa is grooming Arbeloa into the left back position over Riise? Of course we don't know what will happen for the Chelsea game this weekend, but if Arbeloa plays there for the 3 games in a row - is he then first choice and part of the defence we all know Rafa doesn't like rotating?

Should Riise be the one worried?

Sami is too slow to be the cover for Carra and Agger, we need Heinze to play LB and to cover our CBs. Currently if Carra or Agger were out for a few months we would be f***ed.

No, Sami is not mobile enough to play CB the way Rafa wants us to play. He got roasted on a couple of occassions yesterday. Heinze is not fast but he's nowhere near as slow as Sami. If we get Heinze Sami will go to Fulham, Heinze will understudy the CB job as well as doing the LB job.

Heinze will also not be able to hold the line as well, he will rash into challenges and often lose these and gift the opponent with great chances, he will give away a lot of free kicks in dangerous positions and he will get a lot of yellow cards and suspensions.

I dread of seeing a Carra-Heinze partnership at CB they will be all over the place.
