I'm beginning to wonder what Sven is saying with reported bids of £30m for Torres, £10m for Cisse and now £6m for clearly past it Freddie Ljunbgerg. Maybe he's just not bothered how much of Thaksin's cash he wastes but something isn't right when a team are consistently offering way over the odds for players.

Him and hs agent mates are creaming off every bit of cash they can before the scuffers catch on to their shenanigans.

the most ridiculous question ever. When you are getting paid 100k a WEEK to play footy, and the agent walks away with 5mil for negotiating that sort of wage when the fan is charged 30 squid a ticket, and a couple of hundred for sky etc, of course money talks.

You could drop a zero from the numbers involved with football across the board, and still money talks.

Funny, I was just having this conversation with my brother and his mates last night.

I think it is a combination of:

1. Love of the club (boyhood fan, etc.)

2. Desire for medals

3. Money

4. Time on-pitch

5. Family circumstances (settling in, etc.)

Now these can be in varying proportions. For example, Shearer staying at Newcastle and turning down ManU showed high #1. Gerrard considering a move a few years back could be driven by high #2. Lucas Neil choosing WH could be high #3/#4.

I don't think it is rarely as simple as how much money a club is offering. I think a lot of the Chelsea transfers are motivated by #2/#3, but they lose out because of #4 (eg, SWP, Scott Parker, etc.).

So in summary, yes, I agree with Slapnuts on this.

Edit: I'm calling this The Daggerman Theory

How does the Daggerman theory stand up to say....the Lucas Neill test? The Nicolas Anelka test? dare I say - the Michael Owen test?

Hmm. *strokes chin*

Lucas Neil (as in the original post of mine), I reckon his move was a combination of #3 (money) and #4 (wanting to play regularly), which he wouldn't get with us.

I think there could be a case for amending #5 from "Family Circumstances" to "External Influences", which is more of a push-away from the player's current club, rather than a pull-towards the new club; reason to leave over reason to join.

In Owen's case, was his family unsettled in Madrid? I vaguely remember that being an issue (happy to be proved wrong here). Again, his wanting to come back to us (due to #1) was tempered by us not wanting him back too much (#6).

Anelka, I think is moved on by a lot of clubs because of a perceived internal disruption to the team, so he goes because he has to. His choice of clubs to go to is then naturally limited. At somewhere like Bolton or Citeh, he would be the main man, so he would be playing a lot, so I reckon #4 would be a significant driver. Obviously, #3 is in there somewhere.

Its true, the agent is number 6, and probably the worst. Some players have a brain and can think for themselves, but others will listen to teh agent saying that I can get you 50% more if you were to move here. If you don't like it, we can move again.

Players are moving or giving grief for an extra 5k a week, when earning 50 or 60 a week already.

Playing devils advocate though, no begrudges hollywood actors who walk away with 15-20mil a movie, and do one a year. At least our guys are (usually) working hard for 9-10 months of the year, and you get at least 45 'movies' a season! :-)

there will be always be a few exceptions to the norm like Benayoun, Shearer.

there will always be a few players who show genuine loyalty to a club they love.

in the majority of cases these days, money does not so much talk as scream loudly.

there is not much sentiment left in sport these days, owners and boards are happy to profit on a player if the chance comes up, it's hard not to expect the players to do the same thing. the rise of the all powerful agent , together with 24 hour news coverage , has changed the sporting world.
