Got that boxset of all our cup final victories pre-West Ham for Chrimbo.

Anyway, things that stuck out for me:

1. No shin pads!

2. Opposition managers sitting right next to each other

3. Newcastle players were much uglier than ours

4. 2 of their players will later become Liverpool players

5. Heighway was amazing..is he our best ever left wing?

My first ever Cup Final :)

Alec Lindsay scored a beaut that was wrongly given for offside, wonder what Mr Gray would think of that ?

There is a shot of Shankly in that game. In it he is gesticulating towards his players. In his bio there is an apt description of it comparing it to a puppet master controlling the puppet through the strings and making the players do exactly what he wanted them to do in what is defined as one of the first examples of a demonstration of total football.

:D

The hands going back-and-forward thing?

Another thing..and I stand to be corrected but Lindsay looked quite crap in that game apart from the disallowed goal.

Reminded me a lot of Riise.

Brian Hall also impressed me.

The Football we played in that game was superb. That epitomized Liverpool FC and the way we played pass and move footy. The Keegan goal where he starts it on the half way line and Smithy plays the one two is sublime.

He wanted them to keep moving the ball across the pitch to stretch an utterly outclassed Newcastle side.

That ESPN channel is f***ing awesome. We were magic against Bruges in 78. Should have been five nil.

McDermott and Heighway were both truly magnificent footballers who those who are my age don't really know enough about because they weren't as good as Dalglish, Barnes and Souness.

JOHN BARNES

JOHN BARNES

He's my favourite player but I'm only 26 so have no right to say that Barnes is our best ever left-winger.

Alec Lindsey and JAR can't be mentioned in the same breath. Lindsey had one of the finest left pegs in the business and could defend well.

He actually IMO was very underated at the time.

Both McDermott and Heighway were two of the finest players of their time. When you look back at our success in the 70's you will generally find those two making huge contributions. Heighway was predictable but defenders still couldn't stop him. McDermott had the knack of popping up all over the place.

3pm today.

If anyone here hasn't seen it, watch it.

McDermott's vision and intelligence really looked the equal of almost any feted player across Europe of the same period I've seen.

I watched this final last year on DVD - a friend of mine let me copy his collection of Liverpool winning finals.

Was really impressed by the team performance, can't remember a single chance for Newcastle.

The goals were brilliant, especially the last one prepared by Tommy Smith.

And the post-match interviews! The players were answering the questions drinking ... milk.

And the Shanks accent!

As to Lindsay goal, Alec himself was in a perfectly legitimate position, but watching it several times, I thought Keegan was offside. It would have been declared passive now, but in those days there was no such a thing.

Yes, he was a very steady, accurate passer. When Joey Jones became our left back the poor bloke had to put up with Kevin Keegan screaming at how inaccurate he was compared to Alec. He had a point but old Kev could make a stadium tense as easily as he could make it joyful.

How good was Smithy in that game. Not only did he not give their strikers a sniff but his passing was brilliant. Although he was known as a hard man his distribution and confidence coming forward was superb.

My vote goes to Peter Thompson as our best ever left winger. Heighway's main asset was speed, and John Barnes contributed little to many of the games he played, but Thompson had the lot. It was worth the 15p admission fee just to see him play! :)
