Just over the last few weeks i have noticed a few things with the team..

First of all it is nothing new on these forums that Riise is a little challenged when it comes to defending. But if you look back at our goals conceded and the major chances created by opposing teams, there seems to be a trend that the delivery of the balls is coming from the left. Riise seems to be running at players whenthey have the ball instead of standing off. He seems to be flying in without making a challenge, and it seems easy to beat him.

Second point on here is regarding Stevie. I think he is being a real proper captain of late. He is always encouraging and when a goal is scored he is straight over to the scorer. I know there was a lot of speculation going on around 2 months ago but I think he has turned a huge corner and it looks like he is really enjoying captaining his club again.

Thats all really. Nothing major or exciting maybe just something to start a discussion of some sort.

I think Gerrard is enjoying playing in his favoured role. But it seems to be bringing the best out of Alonso. Xabi has less responsibility in starting all our moves centrally and they are controlling games. Yesterday in the first half Watford were playing very direct and cutting out our midfield, which made it difficult. But when Gerrard and Alonso did get the ball down, they always looked dangerous.

Riise is not on top form, the last five or so games he has not played very well really. But it's good that were haven'tbeen conceeding despite this. He was one of few players who started the season well, so maybe he is entitled to have a little slump. Not too worried about Riise.

I didn't want to sound like I was giving out about Riise cause he has been a brilliant player for th club over the last 5 years. I think his lack of form has been down to the lack of competition for the left back slot as well. I think it highlights the importance of the squad in the modern game. I agree about Xabi as well. With Momo in the middle the creative impetus does definitely lie with his central partner. Xabi can just do what he does best now which is make himself available and pass the ball around.

We haven't conceded any goals in the last few weeks. None in the league at all since Nov 12th.

Granted. But there has been close calls. Yesterday for instance Watford should have scored. He just seems to be lacking in a little concentration.

The fact that we have not conceded is also due to us having the rub of the green and our opponents' woeful finishing. We could have just as easily shipped in 2-3 goals in the last couple of matches. The Ginge's Chrimbo might have come early for him but he has got to pull up that gift sock of his ASAP.

We're building up an aura now though, away from home also. Watford had a golden opportunity when Carra messed up and then Reina flapped at the ball. Earlier in the season the opposition would have taken the one opportunity they had and we would have been chasing the game.

I think Riise is living on borrowed time. He has had a poor season so far. He has never been the best left-back around from the defensive point of view, but in my opinion he has kept his place for so many seasons, because he offers "possibilities" going forward, in his funny one-footed way, and scores the occasional goal. Johnny is a bit of a "one-off" - not a brilliant defender, not a very effective midfielder, because he can only use one foot, but the whole has been more than the sum of the parts. One of those players who add something indefinable to the team. However, unless he pulls his socks up he will be on the bench at best when and if Lucas Neill arrives!

Please no. :o

Riise is struggling a bit, but he's still better than that.

I think that he has the quality to pull himself out of this little slump he is in. I dont think he is doing too much wrong. Just a few small things. It might be the fact of who has been playing in front of him not giving him much support. Last season, Riise's best in my opinion he had Kewell in front of him for a good part of the season. I have no idea if this helped at all but just maybe with Luis and Gonzalez in front of him they dont offer as much protection.

I can't believe you mentioned Stevie running to the goalscorer as an observation, it's not that groundbreaking. He's always done it and he'll always continue to do it while he's in a red shirt. Not having a go at you like, but it shows the level of ridiculous fan-base paranoia that surrounds Gerrard that we now analyse how he celebrates other's goals.

To be honest.. I don't think it is something that he was doing regularly at the start of the season. I remember looking for him to come over and celebrate and there was times when he didn't. It could quite possibly be the TV footage that failed to pick up the fact that he was celebrating but it was something that I noticed.

Generous? What protection does Pennant give Finnan (who IMO, gave yet another awful / anonymous performance yesterday)
