Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez would welcome the added pressure for success, should a proposed takeover of the club take place.

The Reds are in discussions over a possible £450 million takeover by Dubai International Capital, which is owned by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The proposed deal would allow the Merseyside giants to compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United to sign the world's top players.

Benitez knows such a deal will come with the expectation of more silverware in the future, but he is relishing the idea of trying to achieve such aims.

"I had 20 years at Real where second meant the end of the world," Benitez told The Sun.

"I want to win every competition. It's the kind of pressure I prefer.

"It isn't easy trying to win trophies when you are signing players from around the world at a lower price.

"But it's not easy to sign top names in January. Normally they are at a top club, in the Champions League or competitions at the top level and teams don't want to sell.

"Also, you could buy a really good player and find he doesn't understand the language, can't settle down or he has problems with his team-mates or the manager.

"So money does not always 100 per cent guarantee success when you are signing people.

"Yes, you can sign better (players), but it isn't always the case they are the right ones.

"But it is obviously positive for the team if the players know they face competition. That can help them to improve their own level."

Benitez will be looking to freshen up his squad come next month when the transfer window opens again.

"As a top side you always look to strengthen and, of course, I want to do something in January but that is normal, not just because of this," he added.

"We can compete if all the players are fit, but you always have some injuries and that makes it more difficult.

"Money does make it easier to sign players and we have identified some other targets in case. But the responsibility is the same, whether you spend £1 or £100.

"When you come to a club like this, it is to win things, so I have the same pressure as before to do so."

If someone goes on about this, "what are the words to the Mancs two times song" or "are the rumours about Gerrards missus true" again, I am going to kill them through the screen.

Why am I not surprised at who it is asking the question?

Is it because you question his intelligence?

Can't believe Rafa has given an interview to that rag. Sack him immediately. And Parry, Gerrard and that new owner bloke.

Is there a rule or something that stops us from letting that rag into our press conference?

I know it would be nothing but a gesture, but I've never worked out why we do it.

You can ban them to your heart's content - all that would happen is an agency would cover it for them
