Brumbies rugby union player Jone Tawake has had one of his right fingers amputated in an attempt to be fit for next year's Super 14 rugby union season.

Tawake suffered a bad dislocation earlier this year and underwent surgery which resulted in complications and an infection.

His only option of being fit and a chance at the World Cup squad was to take drastic action and have the finger removed

Tawake said his team-mates were shocked by the move.

"A few of the Wallaby boys sent me a text message saying can you confirm is it really gone," he said.

"I think most of the boys wouldn't do it but I think for me it was either this or football."
