Liverpools zonal defense

Hello!

You don't know me as I post mostly on sixcrazyminutes.com. I just have a quick question for the YNWA experts.

I've been thinking about our zonal defense and the goals we seem to concede on set pieces. Every team concedes on setpieces, obviously. It's almost always in the vacuum between the keeper and the two CB's. It just can't be helped. We all know that zonal works just fine and if you doubt the effectiveness just look at Italy for evidence. What concerns me is that an effective zonal defence in Italy is always combined with an offside trap. Especially on setpieces. Something Milan (1990!) and other Italien teams has done to perfection. The lack of this trap has cost us dearly! Remember the away game against Benfica to name one:

I'm just wondering if anybody else think that it's a bit strange that we seem to have no real offside trap in place on setpieces?

Thanks for a great website btw.

The bench's reaction always makes me laugh.

The only reason the goals we let in from set pieces are analysed so much is because it's usually the fault of zonal marking and it looks really stupid. It's just that we may concede one or two goals because of it, but we prevent countless goals/chances because of it. The only fault with zonal marking is if someone doesn't do their job.

And we concede almost zero goals from set pieces.

Really?

We concede plenty on set pieces!

not sure why you have listed all the above

the fact (THATS FACT) we conceded two league goals from set pieces last season........Chelsea and Everton.....no run along

Posted

Well done Cad, you have found 3 in just over a seasons worth of games.

we dont concede plenty on set pieces at all.

So there is no reason to work on implementing an offside trap. I see - thank you experts...

Why change something that works? Teams will always score goals from set pieces, its the benefit of being the attacking team, it grants you the initiative. If we were obviously leaking them at a massive rate I'd be concerned, but we're not doing that, so why bother meddling with a good system?

f*** off

hope that helps

Concise and well crafted. I salute you sir.

Yeah - sorry about that. Just got annoyed with the smart-ass oneliners coming back at me!

NOWHERE in the original post do I say that the zonal defense hasn't been good for us. I'm just saying that if we combined it with an off-side trap, we might be able to do even better. The Benfica goal is a good example of this.

its practically impossible to play offside traps from setpieces with the new interpretation of the offside law. also, i feel i must point out, as i am unsure of your actual grasp of the game, but you cant be offside from a corner. and to be honest, i cant genuinely remember the last goal we conceded from a corner. the nature of setpieces, as has already been outlined, means conceding some goals from them are inevitable. but 2 goals in 38 league games from set pieces last season, is, in my opinion, not cause for concern. have you got the stats that show how many other teams concede from set pieces? do you have stats from how many we, and other teams concede from failed offside traps? when you get those stats, come back and we will compere and contrast, and give you our expert opinions

I remember last season or the season before Alessandro Pistone played the offside trap perfectly, from a throw in, sadly, that didnt count either and they scored.

sure it was against newcastle too.
