Newcastle's Celestine Babayaro has been charged with violent conduct by the Football Association after a clash with Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt.

Babayaro appeared to catch Kuyt with his arm during the first half of Newcastle's 2-0 defeat at Anfield.

The incident was not seen by the match officials, but was caught on video and 28-year-old Babayaro has been offered an automatic three-match ban. (What if he doesnt want the ban? )

He has until Monday 25 September to respond to the charge.

I missed the highlights thingy on Sky so haven't seen the elbow. I take it it wasn't anywhere near the Ben Thatcher type of elbow?

I am happy that the FA are taking a hard stance re elbows but there will be occassions when a player genuinely tries to win the ball but uses an elbow (ie when jumping for a header) and gets caned for it.

It was in the first half, I think just after Bellamy was snapped from behind by Ramage (I think it was hime). Kuyt said a few words to Babayaro and then as the free kick is taken Babayaro smacks Kuyt in the face. On the first reply it looks like a punch, but watching another view it looks more like a slap. I completely missed it at the game to be honest and it was only when I watched Football First on Sky that I saw the incident.

Newcastle defender Celestine Babayaro has been charged with violent conduct by The Football Association for an incident involving Liverpool's Dirk Kuyt during Wednesday's match between the two sides.

Babayaro appeared to push Kuyt in the face as the two players jostled in the box while waiting for a corner.

The incident went unnoticed by the referee Mark Halsey during the game, but The FA have decided to take action after viewing television footage.

Babayaro has until Monday September 26 to respond to the charge.

If found guilty the Nigerian faces an automatic three-match ban.

A statement from the FA said: "According to fast track procedures for such cases, along with the charge, Babayaro has been offered the automatic penalty of a three-match suspension.

"He has until 6pm on Monday 25 September to respond to the charge."

It's funny how they can't watch incorrect game changing decisions like penalties, goals, sending off's etc. after the fact. Yet they can look for the odd bit of argy bargy.

At the very least they could get to see how poor their own officials are.

Babayaro is a c***, he's had disciplinary trouble before, violent conduct etc. Deserves the suspension. Would have a preferred a penalty at the time tho. f***ing ref.

I suspect that Kuyt's slightly delayed reaction might have caused the referee to have doubts as to exactly what happened particularly if he did not have a perfect view of the incident. If you are going to exaggerate contact it is important that it is consistent with the laws of physics.

There was honestly f*** all in that. Yes he connected him and yes he is guilty, but it was not much more else than what you see week in week out.

FA is getting SOFT if you ask me.

Personally I think he was unlucky that he didn't hit Kuyt in the chest cos he would have gotten away with that, but he broke the rules so tough

He deserved what he got but other players have done similar and got away with it.

FA looking at those kind of incidents shows that they could look at the shirt pulling incidents.
