i travelled back week lat Tuesday for my ma's funeral which took place on the Weds of the Haifa game....

My flight back to paris was early Thursday morning ( the morning of the inital chaos because of the terror alerts).....Anyway, I was doing the self service check out thingy, and it was absolute chaos in the airport....anyway, this voice next to me says..."Excuse me mate, do you now how to do this...."....a voice I recognised......it was John Barnes, and he was in a right tether........i showed him how to use the machine, and we had a short chat....he was on his way to the Newcastle game that night....we had a chat about Liverpool, and I mentioned I had been to the game......he told me the following....

1. Kuyt was on the verge of signing, and he thinks he will score bags of goals in England...

2. Crouch has to improve his finishing and strength if he wants to stay in the team, and if he doesnt and Kuyt is the success that Digger thinks he will then Crouch might be in trouble come next summer...That actually sounds a bit more negative than it was, but it was the jist of what he was saying

3. He thinks Pennant will be a revelation, and he can see bit of himself in him.....I said that Digger was never that quick, which prompted him to call me a "cheeky sod"

4. he rezally rates Gonzalez and Agger, and thinks Riise & Hyypia might struggle to play the majority of games this season

5. He doesnt think we will win the league but thinks we may finish second and win the European Cup...

He aslo said we woudl struggle to get the three points at Sheff utd seeing as they have just been promoted, 1st game and all that

All in all he was a really sound bloke, and looks slimmer than he does on the tele

I also saw Joe Royle later but ignored him :D

Nice story - 2) had occured to me too. I thought there was one little scene in the Community Shield that points to Crouch already having done some work on his strength, it wasn't spectacular or anything, it was just some Chelsea player actually failing to muscle him off the ball which prompted me thinking "he (Crouch) couldn't do that last year"...

and we had a short chat?

5 mins or so......maybe 10....

I had to break it off as I needed to get into my 2 hour long queue

No we would have seen through that and then thought you had not met John Barnes.

Thanks for the story though. Was more a comment on how bloody obvious his comments are than

anything to do with you.

take any liverpool fan, chat to him about football in general and he isnt going to say much different he is

thats on of the things I liked about him...he was freindly, wanted to chat and he didnt try to be clever or come across as knowing more than me....The only time he said he knew something was when he said that he had heard something off Ian Rush the night before saying that Kuyt talks were at an advanced stage and he thought he would be tied u[ by the Sheff Utd game, which at the time was something I dismissed

See him quite a bit when I go to my mates, he drops his daughter off at the school my mate works at. He is a really nice bloke (JB), my mate often chats with JB although he has absolutely no knowledge of football himself, so it must be really strange for him not to be asked about Liverpool etc.

Sorry to hear about your mum Anny. You have been really dignified throughout her illness. I hope she is at peace now.

Firstly, sorry to hear about your mum.

Secondly, you have met and chatted to me all time Liverpool hero anny, I would have been a quivering wreck.

Digger was a liverpool legend right up there with kenny and keegan in my eyes
