They tried for Mellor too, should be a good move for him.

Crewe have agreed to sign Liverpool centre back on a six-month loan deal. Having impressed in a recent friendly, Crewe were believed to be alerted to his availability following an unsuccessful enquiry regarding Neil Mellor.

The 20-year old is yet to feature competitively for his club, though he was included in the squad for the 2005 World Club Championship in. Since joining the Reds in 2002, O'Donnell has captained their Under 18 side, and was last year promoted to train with the first-team squad.

The move comes as somewhat of a surprise, albeit a pleasant one, as Crewe have already signed three centre-backs this summer. Darran Kempson's performance against Northampton was highly promising, though it appears Mark Roberts' departure on loan to Halifax has culminated in a need for an extra centre-back. O'Donnell will wear the number 37 shirt.

He looked good against Crewe. His positioning was very good. And he was always talking to his team mates.

Good move all round, as it will give him better experience and can't get a better manager than Gradi to learn how to play football from.

Wonder why Mellor didn't go. I thought Rafa would've been happy loan him out.

My mate is convinced Dario Gradi is gay. He said it's well known. I've never heard that before.

just cos he's a Daniel O'Donnell fan doesn't mean he's gay.

He can do far better than a League One team to be fair and they probably wouldnt pay f*** all of his wages

I know an ex-Crewe player who said Gradi invited a lot of the youth players over to his house regularly. Whether that means he's gay or not is open to interpretation!

think there must be some confusion with Barry Burnell here who used to look after the youth and was done for paedophilia in the US. Know a few lads from our school who used to go to those stopovers at Barry's house.

Explains how one particular lad went completely off the rails at a very young age.
