Owls end Carson chase

2006-06-27 11:42

Sheffield Wednesday manager Paul Sturrock has confirmed that he has ended his pursuit of Liverpool keeper Scott Carson.

Sturrock was hoping to secure the services of the Reds ace on loan for the whole of next season after his successful loan spell at Hillsborough at the end of the last campaign

The Owls' boss has decided to turn his attention elsewhere after Liverpool said that they were not prepared to make a decision on Wednesday's bid until the end of next month.

Reports earlier in the week had also indicated that the Reds would prefer Carson, who is currently on World Cup duty with England, to get experience in the Premiership if he wasn't playing for them next season.

Sturrock told the Owls' official website: "We just can't take a chance on waiting and waiting and then finding out a Premiership team comes in for Scott. Then we'll be scrambling for a goalkeeper a week from the start of the season.

"I'm disappointed as he was a real benefit to us in the last nine games. We'd like to thank him - he will be an exceptional goalie for England and whichever club he plays for."

What would be the point of loaning Carson out to a sh*t team? He's a top keeper and we either need him or we don't.

Personally I think he has no chance of displacing Reina and is too good to be kept on the bench, so we might as well sell him. He's worth a few bob now.

And when Reina picks up an injury?

Personally I think the dude will move on, Carson will be 'offical' number 2 and play some cup games etc.

Reckon that price would be even higher after a good season of Premiership football behind him though!

Maybe the Dudes wages are a stumbling block over moving him on?

I agree. How many teams have a keeper of his ability/potential as back up? You can't keep him just on the off chance that Reina gets a serious injury, Carson isn't likely to want that and it isn't really fair. His career will just stagnate.

Reina's likely to be 1st choice for a good few years now. 2nd choice should be someone who is happy to be second choice - an older guy like Dudek.

Jerzy has been a great keeper and he will always be remembered for Istanbul. He has had his critics (me included), but if Carson is happy with being second choice then that will do for me. He will get a few games during the season (Carling Cup etc).

Not to mention the three games after we've played Chelsea...

Reckon he will only get three games after he ****s half their team?:unsure:

Looking at how desperate he seems to be to leave I cant see that. It's always looked like our valuation has stopped a deal happening

Given Rafa's love of a swap deal i can see us offering him to Feyenoord

I think that was mainly about the world cup

I think there's been talk of Carson going to Cardiff and Sam Hamman was supposedly at Anfield last week.

So he actually gets some real match practise?

Yes we can - he signed up to be #2, so he will have to live with that

As Will said he signed as a number 2 only 1.5 seasons ago - in fact was it number 3 at the time?

If he is patient who knows what kind of chance he may get - Paul Robinson was number 2 at Leeds, Martyn got injured and Robinson is now scaring all England fans at the World Cup!!!

Also, if a keeper of the class of Cudicini is happy to be number 2 why not Carson?

He is still young for a keeper, there is loads of time.

You could argue that for a keeper, he'll be better off at sh*te team than a good one where he won't have anything to do.

Personally I've not seen anything when he's played for us or the England U21 from him that makes me think he'll ever be more than a No. 2 for Liverpool. He needs to make a decision if he'll rather do that or play first choice for the boltons / middlesbros of this world.

We don't have the cash to appease the Cuddicini types who are happy to sit on the bench if a huge pay check is in the offing.

Personally I like Dudek as No.2, but fully understand if he is not happy with that, he could be playing for a top european side as first choice.

If Carson wants more action then he should ask for a move/loan

Otherwise, we can keep him on our bench (assuming Jerzy leaves) until such time as he does get fed up

Not bothered what he thinks about it really - Pepe is #1 and will remain so while fit. Carson will have to like it or lump it

Is there any chance that Carson and Dudek both go and Kirkland stays as number 2? Surely the glassman is the least sellable of the lot?

Like last time we relied on CK as number two, and on the one occasion Dudek got injured, we had to get in Paul Jones because CK promptly broke his finger.

Having CK as number two is like not having a number two at all.

So we keep him here until he has had enough. If that has already happened then get rid. If that happens halfway through next season then get rid. But until it does happen we should keep him.

Agreed the more he plays at the top level the higher his price will get too.
